Changing the world’s energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure ⚛️
About us
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov.

The birthplace of the first usable nuclear energy was right here in Idaho in 1951. From there, the United States led the implementation of nuclear energy globally. While nuclear energy production has taken off in other countries over the past 3 decades, the United States is now poised to increase homegrown energy, including advanced nuclear energy. Idaho National Laboratory is leading advanced nuclear research that will accelerate the next generation of nuclear energy, making it more affordable and accessible than ever - helping America to reclaim its place at the forefront of global nuclear energy. Municipal drinking water and wastewater systems are vulnerable targets for cyber-attacks, which can cause severe disruptions and contamination risks. To safeguard these critical infrastructures, Idaho is championing Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) in grant proposals for new systems or upgrades. Developed at Idaho National Laboratory, CIE is gaining recognition for enhancing proposal scores and ensuring robust cybersecurity measures. The state of Idaho now prioritizes CIE in submissions, emphasizing that it is both affordable and easy to implement. Idaho National Laboratory chief power grid scientist Emma Stewart testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party regarding the security of the U.S. critical infrastructure supply chain, including the electric power grid. ⚡️🌐 “The grid, as we know it, faces numerous threats to its continued reliability and needs to exponentially increase load-handling capabilities to serve artificial intelligence and Big Data; overcome the challenges of catastrophic weather events that cause significant, expensive, long-term damage; and get ahead of damaging cyberattacks from adversarial state actors. We also must—in parallel—modernize and adapt grid technology to dominate in energy delivery on the global stage.” As a worldwide leader in operational technology cybersecurity and power grid resilience, the laboratory was proud to send one of our top research engineers to Capitol Hill to share our technical analysis and provide actionable recommendations. Special thanks to Rep. John Moolenaar and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi for the invitation to testify and to co-witnesses Rob Joyce and Laura Galante. We have four test reactors in operation at Idaho National Laboratory. What's the difference between a test reactor and a commercial one? We're glad you asked! ⚛️ Test reactors generate at lower temperature and pressures than commercial reactors do. Also, test reactors don't produce power. Watch to learn more about the research and testing that takes place right here in southeast Idaho and visit https://lnkd.in/gtMvVJXY. #AskINL #nuclear #energy #NuclearReactor #IdahoNationalLaboratory #NuclearEnergy #Idaho
