On Dec 5th and 6th, NRIC, in collaboration with Nuclear Energy Institute and EPRI, organized the Nuclear Quality Assurance Challenges Workshop in Washington, D.C. Over 80 participants attended the workshop, including reactor developers, material suppliers, EPCs, code committees (ASME NQA-1, ASME BPVC, ACI, AISC, and ASCE), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Nuclear Quality Assurance is a critical topic in the nuclear industry due to its associated cost premiums and supply chain bottlenecks. The goal of this workshop was to work with stakeholders and identify paths forward to address these challenges. Topics discussed include the need for education and training, modernizing (e.g., for software quality) and right-sizing quality requirements, using risk-informed methods to minimize the number of safety-related systems, leveraging non-nuclear quality assurance processes such as ISO-9001 (with additional controls) to open up the supply chain.
This workshop is just the beginning, and we plan to keep the conversations going. Please contact NRIC, NEI, or EPRI if you’d like to be involved.
NRIC POCs: Chandrakanth Bolisetti Bolisetti and Sanjay Mukhi, MBA Mukhi
