Balatro C64 – Important Update!

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately, I have to take down this project. The team at Playstack reached out to me in a very polite and professional manner, requesting its removal, and I fully respect their wishes.

Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm for this version—I truly appreciate it!

Stay tuned for more retro projects in the future.

Cheers,

Ko-Ko

What a shame it had to be removed. Do you think maybe they'll allow it in some form in the future including paid? I would love to play this on actual hardware as its a very impressive project.

(+1)

Honestly, I don't know. I wrote to them that I'd offer this 8-bit version for free, but I'm open to any kind of solution to publish the game. I'm still waiting for the answer, and I'll communicate here if I have any new information.

(+1)

if someone still has the files for this please reach out to me on discord @steadyslumped I want to play this

(-2)

Wow my respect for local think just went from 100 to 0. What a dick move, I don't care how "polite" they were being.

I would like to note that Playstack did this, not Localthunk.

(+1)

Absolutely. As far as I know, this was Playstack's decision; LocalThunk was not involved.

(+1)

Sad I missed out on this, I could have downloaded it and tried it on actual hardware.

(+3)

Slide me those files koko

(+2)

Should Try and get LocalThunk to release this officially

(+2)

I'm trying, hope I get a positive answer.

(+3)

I want to buy it on cassette.

im trying to play the game but i cant see the link for it

(+1)

Nooo... I haven't try it

(+2)

I don't think a publisher should have that much control over the rights of a game.

(+2)

Well... that was fun while it lasted. Had fun playing it.

(+1)

ahaha nice!

(-3)

Looks really nice, very impressive achievement! May I suggest trying to use softer colors? Perhaps more grey shades with some colorful accents would get the message across while at the same time being easier on the eyes

(+3)

C64 has only 16 colors lol :D

I'm well aware of that, just like I am well aware of all the limitations with displaying multiple colors simultaneously. What I am suggesting is that you might choose a milder color palette, perhaps also using sprites for color accents where they are needed. In general using light grey, grey and dark grey for backgrounds and geometries can be quite a bit nicer on the eyes than, say, a solid yellow background, while still looking quite slick

(+3)

Amazing.  But you just know they'd use screenshots from the Windows version on the back of the box.

(+1)

Woo!

if you still have this please send me the files on discord @steadyslumped <3

I don't have the files, I'm sorry

(+1)

I honestly would love to playtest and bug report this for you, this is sick!
Can i ask what jokers are/arent included?
[i have found some bugs but i only wanna report them if youre okay with those]

(2 edits) (+3)

Thanks for your interest! Feel free to share any bugs you’ve found—every bit of feedback helps. About 50 jokers have been implemented, and you can see them when you play the game. :-)

(+1)

As for this current version (and what I have found so far):
Discards by default are 0.
Xmult doesn't show up in the red scoring, only in the final score [which made me think first that it was bugged and didn't work].
The fact that the key "i" shows the Run Info isn't displayed anywhere.
Secret hands are not implemented and are bugged [As of right now I've only been able to try 5oaK, and it defaults to High Card].
High Card does not score chips.

(+2)

Many thanks for the feedback! I'll check them out. Secret hands were not implemented as I had memory issues. Currently, about 30-40 percent of the original game logic has been implemented in this version

In normal balatro, Jokers like Jolly Joker (+8 mult if hand contains a pair). in this version, it only activates if hand is a pair, not if it contains a pair.

When you sort by Suit, the next round it will sort by Rank while the button says Suit; you need to toggle it twice to sort by Suit.

Also, you start with $0 instead of $4, which makes it harder.

(+2)

thanks for these, too.

(+1)

lastly (and its technically not a bug), in the most up to date version of balatro, the 4 of a kind chip and mult jokers have changed to 2 pair jokers (not the xmult one)

(+1)

after finding all 45 jokers, the only thing i can add for now is that Neptune only levels up straight flush, and not royal flush. i really like the ko-ko joker!

(+2)

Many thanks for the detailed bug reports, I'll check all in the following days.

(+1)

Aces are not seen by odd todd as an odd number

(+2)

I've got a little time, so I fixed these:

  • Suit/rank suite problem
  • Start with $0 instead of $4
  • Start with 0 discards instead of 3 (default)

I also updated the online playable version—now with music and SFX.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback! More bug fixes are coming. :-)

(+1)

im really happy i can help you out for this!! :D

(+2)

I'll definitely give you credit as a tester in the final release.

(+1)

It's so wholesome to read this conversation as it happens

(+1)

thank you both so much, genuinely!!

Starting with yellow deck, instead of adding $10 to $4, you start with $10 flat

(+1)

wow, thanks!

(+1)

is there a place to download a beta?  I want to try it on my C64

(+1)

Unfortunately, no, because I don't have approval from the original game developer/publisher!

Well I hope you get it :)

(+1)

I'm working on it :-)

(+1)

will the digital version remain free after the physical print publication is out?

(+2)

It really depends on the original developer/publisher's decision, but there's no information regarding this one.

(+1)

Wow this is crazy cool, musics great too

(+1)

Thanks!

This is really cool!

Awesome. I am making a balatro remake but it's not nearly as cool as this...

Hey this is really cool.  I'm a fan of Balatro and a fan of retro games - nicely done!

Thanks!

Absolutely needs to have discards when you start, cause the only good deck rn is Yellow Deck given it's extra money.

Yes, Yellow deck is my absolutely favourite, too,

Just go for blue deck, you'll end up with 255 Discards heheh, and on my second visit to the shop I actually got a Joker that gives +30 Chips per discard, so I end up getting like 50000 Chips. This takes like 16 minutes to add the chips, as it does like 50 chips per second each time I win a round.

(+1)

Thanks for finding another bug :-)

(+1)

You're welcome ;-) and great idea, looking forward to the next updates.

It's good that the C64 will have its own Balatro, a fun game. I also added it to my new "Gameplay of New C64 Games from October 2024" video, along with other C64 games released in October.

Many thanks!!!
