Wechat discuss: How to invest using passive investing style | rebalance? | Case study: SABR stock loss $11,000 US dollars

 Dear:

The chatting history for this WeChat group "投资小群" is shown below.

————— 2022-05-13 —————

第五点,分享一个投资名言,stay in the market, not time the market.

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 20:03

Anne

Anne

Anne

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 20:55

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:15

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:18

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:20

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:48

[Grin]

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:53

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:53

付英凤 ivyEducate.com 21:56

[Facepalm]

Anne

winnie 22:08

winnie 22:09

下周一买回5000股,4000股不time the market

Questrade TFSA account: 2021 performance review

#GreedyLesson #StopLoss

Dec. 29, 2021

Introduction

It is the most important task to conduct a short performance review on my TFSA account on questrade.com. I like to summarize my performance, and my loss is less than $5,000 Canadian dollars, less than 10% up to Dec. 28, 2021.

My stock gains and loss

I wrote down on a paper on my performance.

  1. Nok stock gain $1407
  2. Gte.To $667
  3. Rig $600
  4. PFE $890
  5. BMY $220
  6. HON $220
  7. SABR $420
  8. CMCSA $166
  9. DIS (961)
  10. AZN $220
  11. ARDX $750
  12. GRAY (5443)
My gain is around $4490, and my loss from GRAY is (5443). I have to learn from my own experience. How to cut loss early on GRAY stock.

10 reasons GRAY stock is not good for a beginner

I like to put together 10 reasons GRAY stock is not good for a beginner.

  1. GRAY stock price went down from $30 to $6, and I was attracted to make first purchase.
  2. After that, I continued to make purchase to cover my loss.
  3. I did not learn how to cut loss, so that my loss was around $4000 dollars; My investment is more than $5000 dollars.
  4. After a few months, there was a short squeeze. The position went up more than $5000 dollars in one day; I did not sell with $1000 gain, I wanted more.
  5. After that, I held the position with $5000 dollars loss, and hopefully I will not miss any short squeeze.
  6. The stock price went up around $4.3 and went down $3.00 dollars. I got emotionally attached to the stock, especially after I spent hours studying AMD disease, eye disease, my late mom's eye problem in her late 50s.
  7. I did not review my portfolio since too many positions in crash in Nov. 2021, DIS, PSFE, SABR, AAL. All my funds are in equities. 100%. GRAY is a small equity, which is easy to manipulate.
  8. I decided to cut loss at $1.78/ share, I did add 1500 shares at 2.20/ share after drop from $3.0
There are so many lessons I learned from my own investment. Those are my 10 years savings from Canada. The road is tough for me to invest in by myself, I need to get more educated and learn from my own experience.

I should cut loss early. I should not invest in any stock like biotech stocks.

Nov. 10, 2023
Biggest problem is related to GRAY stock (5443).
1. I should invest GRAY stock at all. It went bankrupt.
2. The loss is bigger than all other gains in 2021.
3. I should spend US dollars $5000 to purchase morningstar.com and tipranks.com, but it was not clear that I did not take initiatives to purchase any professional service on equity investment.

Gray stock: My thoughts | Diversify and reduce the risk

Dec. 14, 2021

Gray stock | Yahoo -> Finance -> Conversation

 I do believe that in short term, GRAY has around $71 mil cash with capital value 39 million. It is best time to buy GRAY stock. But GRAY stock price may go down depending on multiple factors: Fear, less buyers in biotech. GRAY 40% down in one month, CVM 30% down in one month, ATNX 31.90%, CRTX 23%, AVIR 30%.

I like to sell some of GRAY stocks, and then purchase a list of biotech stocks: GRTX, ARDX, and more.

June 16, 2023

Why biotech stocks? Why do you not purchase Morningstar and get professional analyst opinion on Gray stock first? Do you evaluate down risk first?

Limit Order vs. Stop Order: What's the Difference? | My 20 minutes study | Gray stock position case study

 July 4, 2021

Introduction

I have some issues to manage risk to invest $10,000 dollars on GRAY stock. It is very risky stock and the price can drop easily 10%. I like the challenge, but I have to learn more how to avoid big losses.

Limit Order vs. Stop Order: What's the Difference?

Limit Orders vs. Stop Orders: An Overview

Different types of orders allow you to be more specific about how you'd like your broker to fill your trades. When you place a limit order or stop order, you tell your broker you don't want the market price (the current price at which a stock is trading); instead, you want your order to be executed once the stock price matches a price that you specify.

There are two primary differences between limit and stop orders. The first is that a limit order uses a price to designate the least acceptable amount for the transaction to take place, while a stop uses a price to merely trigger an actual order once the specified price has been traded. The second is that a limit order can be seen by the market; a stop order can't until it is triggered.

For example, if you want to buy an $80 stock at $79 per share, then your limit order can be seen by the market and filled when sellers are willing to meet that price. A stop order will not be seen by the market and will only be triggered once the stop price has been met or exceeded.

In a regular stop order, if the price triggers the stop, a market order will be entered. If the order is a stop-limit, then a limit order will be placed conditional on the stop price being triggered. Thus, a stop-limit order will require both a stop price and a limit price, which may or may not be the same.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A limit order is visible to the market and instructs your broker to fill your buy or sell order at a specific price or better.
  • A stop order isn't visible to the market and will activate a market order once a stop price has been met.
  • A stop order avoids the risks of no fills or partial fills, but because it is a market order, you may have your order filled at a price much worse than what you were expecting.

Limit Orders

limit order is an order to buy or sell a stock for a specific price.1 For example, if you wanted to purchase shares of a $100 stock at $100 or less, you can set a limit order that won't be filled unless the price you specified becomes available. However, you cannot set a plain limit order to buy a stock above the market price because a better price is already available.

Similarly, you can set a limit order to sell a stock once a specific price is available. Imagine that you own stock worth $75 per share and you want to sell if the price gets to $80 per share. A limit order can be set at $80 that will only be filled at that price or better. You cannot set a limit order to sell below the current market price because there are better prices available.

In order to trigger a stop order only when a valid quoted price in the market has been met, brokers add the term "stop on quote" to their order types.

Stop Orders

Stop orders come in a few different variations, but they are all effectively conditional based on a price that is not yet available in the market when the order is originally placed. Once the future price is available, a stop order will be triggered, but depending on its type, the broker will execute them differently.1

Many brokers now add the term "stop on quote" to their order types to make it clear that the stop order will only be triggered once a valid quoted price in the market has been met. For example, if you set a stop order with a stop price of $100, it will be triggered only if a valid quote at $100 or better is met.

A normal stop order will turn into a traditional market order once your stop price is met or exceeded. A stop order can be set as an entry order as well. If you wanted to open a position once the price of a stock is rising, a stop market order could be set above the current market price, which turns into a regular market order once your stop price has been met.2

In order to trigger a stop order only when a valid quoted price in the market has been met, brokers add the term "stop on quote" to their order types.

Stop-Limit Orders

stop-limit order consists of two prices: a stop price and a limit price. This order type can be used to activate a limit order to buy or sell a security once a specific stop price has been met.1 For example, imagine you purchase shares at $100 and expect the stock to rise. You could place a stop-limit order to sell the shares if your forecast was wrong.

$90 stop price | $90.50 the limit price | what if $89 per share < $90 stop price | What condition to activate the order | Confusing for beginner

If you set the stop price at $90 and the limit price at $90.50, the order will be activated if the stock trades at $90 or worse. However, a limit order will be filled only if the limit price you selected is available in the market. If the stock drops overnight to $89 per share, that is below your stop price so that the order will be activated, but it will not be filled immediately because there are no buyers at your limit price of $90.50 per share. The stop price and the limit price can be the same in this order scenario.

Risks | no fills or partial fills | Stop-limit order | My study - 1:23 AM

A stop-limit order has two primary risks: no fills or partial fills. It is possible for your stop price to be triggered and your limit price to remain unavailable. If you used a stop-limit order as a stop loss to exit a long position once the stock started to drop, it might not close your trade.

Even if the limit price is available after a stop price has been triggered, your entire order may not be executed if there wasn't enough liquidity at that price. For example, if you wanted to sell 500 shares at a limit price of $75, but only 300 were filled, then you may suffer further losses on the remaining 200 shares.

A stop order avoids the risks of no fills or partial fills, but because it is a market order, you may have your order filled at a price much worse than what you were expecting. For example, imagine that you have set a stop order at $70 on a stock that you bought for $75 per share.

The company reports earnings after the market closes and opens the next day at $60 per share after disappointing investors. Your order will be activated, and you could be out of the trade at $60, far below your stop price of $70.

Case study | Gray stock | My loss over $1200 dollars in two days | Apply stop limit order

My goal is to learn how to manage the position with minimum time. I like to avoid loss over $1200 dollars in less than two days. What should I do? The stock went down last two business days so quickly.

Total loss from June 30 to July 4 is $1248.27. I should learn something here.

Gray stock: $10,000 capital | opportunity for long term investor | what to learn

June 18, 2021

Introduction

It is the first time I like to learn from my friend. I chose to invest $10,000 dollars on GRAY stock, and try to figure out opportunities to make gains, and lessons I learn from my own experience.

Opportunities

It is risky to purchase $10,000 US dollars. I manage my TFSA account $70,000 dollars, but after 12 months, I still have losses.

Here are opportunities of GRAY easy for me to catch, but I still did not take the opportunities.

  1. Price went down $3.6/ share, I should purchase another 1000 shares of Gray; I was not on the track, worried about $5000 loss; Stay positive; It creates opportunity to short squeeze.
  2. Sell 1280 shares at price $8.5/ share. Make profit $1400 dollars. I tried to make more money. My expectation went higher, think about $12/ share instead. Try to play with the market, and take steps to build wealth. The stock is risky, the first step is not to lose money;
  3. On June 17, 2021, short squeeze, there are four times from $5.2 to $6.0. 10% gain four times in less than one hour;
  4. Compared to NOK 3500 shares, GTE.TO 12000 shares, it is better for me to adapt high risky biotech, learn from this investment.
  5. Do not be scared. I still have at least 12 months to learn from this investment and make profit.

GRAY stock: My irrational behaviors | Lack of compassionate | Need to be simple and optimistic | Too greedy is not good

June 17, 2021

Introduction

It is tough for me to understand the short squeeze. I like to take risk to lose all $10,000 dollars to invest on GRAY stock, since I do believe that it is important to advance technology to take care of AMD disease.

GRAY stock | My irrational behaviors

I work hard and learn how to invest. But my behavior is irrational after recent GRAY stock short squeeze. The short term $5000 gains on GRAY position is gone, I do not keep any benefit of short squeeze. So I like to analyze this finance behavior concept, which is called analysis paralysis.

I need to sell at least 50% of shares and learn how to work with risky stocks, and how to play with short squeeze.

In the long term, GRAY stock may go up above $10/ share. But in the short term, it is for me to play safely and learn how business works.

June 16, 2023

  1. Do not purchase any stock with no income!
  2. Do not count cash Gray stock has at the purchase!
  3. Do not gamble on GRAY stock for price fluctuation!
  4. Do not touch those companies like GRAY!
  5. Focus on good companies, like Google, MSFT instead.
  6. Learn quant rating, and learn morningstar ratings, buy high quality stocks.
  7. Control risk do not gamble!

Gray stock: My lessons | How to perform better in short squeeze?

 June 16, 2021

Introduction

I like to write down something to help me to trade better on gray stock. I did not do anything and then gray stock went up from 4.5 to 8.5, and then went down $5.1.

Lessons learned

It is tough for me to learn economy real situation and pandemic job market. I spent one hour to attend HackerX event yesterday after work, I knew that it is tough for so many progammers to find a job.

So it is important to keep learning on stock market, and work better with others on investing.

Here are highlights:

  1. My friend on wechat told me that Gray stock went up;
  2. I also  noticed the short squeeze when it started;
  3. My friend shared with me she sold 300 shares of GRAY stock at $6.9;
  4. I watched the gray stock went up $8.5;
  5. I sent three messages to three wechat group - is it a short squeeze - gray stock.
Now look at the chat:

Yahoo -> Finance -> Portfolio, Gray position

  1. Learn how to determine it is top; if I could not figure out, then I should sell 50% of shares of GRAY at 8.5/ share;
  2. Next day Gray stock may continue to be squeezed, but I should set stop loss, so that I can sell 100% shares around 5.7/ share;
  3. Take risk to lose all $9000 dollars to learn how to invest this risky biotech stock, stay on track;
  4. Take 30 minutes to write down a blog to learn how to deal with depressed feeling after my technical mistakes.
  5. Share with others. Important is to copy others and do not overthink.

Follow up

June 16, 2021
I should have purchased 1000 to 3000 shares of GRAY stocks when the price went down around $3.6/ share instead of 100 shares.

It is risky to work on TFSA account since there is loss around $3000 dollars. I should take more risk since NOK stock had 30% gains with 3500 shares position.

June 16, 2023
I can tell that I was in wrong direction to be a good investor.

I can tell a few things wrong in my thinking back on July 16, 2021.
  1. I chose not to be a long term investor back in 2021. Bet on price flunctuation!
  2. I should read more carefully about my writings - Take risk to lose all $9000 dollars! This is so dangerous thinking.
  3. Too much risk to work on GRAY stock back in 2021.
  4. I searched finviz.com and then found this biotech stock. My selection criteria were wrong.

Gray stock: Oct. 27, 2020 | Pump and dump?

March 21, 2021

Here is the article.

Last on Needham’s value list is Graybug, a biopharmaceutical firm conducting clinical-stage research on medications to treat chronic diseases of the retina and optic nerve. The company focuses on long-term treatments, with drugs to be administered no more than twice per year – and provide relief from vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema.

Graybug’s IPO in September was notably successful; the company started trading at $16 per share, above the $15 originally planned, and sold almost 1 million more shares than first announced.

Biotech firms are famously mercurial as stock investments. They tend to run deep losses for long periods, as medical research is both expensive and impossible to short cut. The rewards, however, are real, as one popular drug, or a treatment that is perceived as essential, can bring in tremendous profits once it goes on the market. That’s the value Needham sees here.

Starting coverage on this stock for Needham is analyst Serge Belanger, who says of GRAY, “Anti-VEGF therapies generate ~$12B in WW sales as the standard of care for retinal diseases despite 40%-50% of patients experiencing inadequate responses and a treatment burden that impacts patient compliance. We believe [the company's] GB-102 can disrupt the anti-VEGF market with a differentiated mechanism of action and longer-dosing intervals. Upcoming ph 2b trial data in 1H21 represent the most near-term value-driving catalyst.”

In line with his outlook, Belanger rates the stock a Buy. His $30 price target represents an impressive 96% upside potential for the year ahead. (To watch Belanger’s track record, click here)

Wall Street agrees that GRAY is a buying proposition. The stock has 6 recent reviews, and all are Buys, making the Strong Buy consensus rating unanimous. Shares are selling for $15.32, and the $32.50 average price target implies an upside of 115%. (See GRAY stock analysis on TipRanks)

Gray stock: 800 shares | Expect 5 time return | Market for retinal disease | Prepare for retirement | Yahoo finance -> conversation

 March 18, 2021

Introduction

I made quick decision to invest 800 shares of Gray stock since I think that it may be a good candidate to bring 5 times return in short future or a few years. I like to learn more about vision and health of eye. I like to push myself to learn how to be a good investor on Gray stock as well.

Gray stock -> Yahoo -> Finance -> Conversation

I do not have knowledge to do research on gray stock, so I just copy some comments from Yahoo -> Finance. I bought 800 shares of GRAY stock with average price $8.30/ share.

Highlights - 500%

GrayBug - For people with chronic diseases of the retina and the optic nerve, we develop medicines that make healthy vision more accessible and manageable, promoting better compliance and visual outcomes.

Phase 2 trial

The selloff was intended. Big investors will buy, buy and hold, this is a good pharma stock, and retina solutions are being on fire lately, good sector, good phase 2 trial... I don't understand this overreaction that is not proportional to the actual facts. It should have been the opposite +50% after the report and not this massive selloff. I feel something big is going to happen be prepared. Shouldn't be surprised to see the stock again at 15-17$ tomorrow.

As of today, 22 patients have successfully completed 2 months or more of this six-month extension period without the need for further treatment. No averse effects and sustained benefit. THIS IS GOOD NEWS!!!

This research is new to me. I have no idea that I should invest $5000 dollars on this GRAY stock. I do think that vision is so important and it is a big market to advance research and development a product for patients.

Gray stock: My research starts from 800 shares of investment on March 15, 2021

Graybug Vision (GRAY)
