The UK Government has abandoned plans to destroy original paper Wills in England and Wales after widespread opposition during a public consultation. The consultation, which saw responses from around 1,600 individuals, included family historians, genealogists, and the general public, many of whom expressed concerns about the security, reliability, and authenticity of digitised Wills. While respondents supported digitisation for accessibility and preservation, they opposed the destruction of originals. The government will maintain the original archive, citing ongoing storage costs, and is considering revising fees for accessing copies of Wills to offset expenses. #Will #LegalNews #LegalReform

📑 Policy@Manchester has supported a written evidence submission to the Modern Slavery Act 2015 Committee's inquiry examining the Act's impact and effectiveness. 💡 The inquiry also set out to consider how the Act’s provisions have been implemented, how it has been impacted by recent political developments, and whether it requires improvement. The published written evidence by Professor David Gadd and Professor Rose Broad uses their research to demonstrate how current policy decreases the protections available to those who are destitute and exploited.
