After over 20 years of dedicated service, Captain Cassie Kalayasilpin is retiring from Avondale Fire & Medical. Known for her leadership, passion, and service with a smile, Cassie has made a lasting impact on our community.   As EMS Captain, she took her role to new heights and has been a true leader in the department. While we’ll miss her, we’re excited for her next chapter as Fire Academy Supervisor at Glendale Community College.   Thank you, Cassie, for your incredible contributions to Avondale. We were honored to celebrate the renovations of Sam Garcia Library and A.B. Sernas Plaza with the Garcia and Sernas families last week! 🎉 The library now boasts refreshed information desks, upgraded self-checkout machines, and new furniture in the children’s, teen, and adult sections. Plus, new paint, modern lighting, and updated signage make it a welcoming space for all visitors. And don't miss the updates to A.B. Sernas Plaza—featuring new benches, a re-seeded lawn, and plaza signage outside the library. 📚 These wonderful renovations were made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.

The first Council Meeting of the year was a momentous occasion as we proudly welcomed our new and returning leaders during the swearing-in ceremony! 🎉   Mayor Mike Pineda and Councilmembers Jeannette Garcia, Gloria Solorio, and Shari Weise took the oath of office, officially starting their terms of service for the City of Avondale. In addition, Vice Mayor Curtis Nielson was selected to serve another two-year term as Vice Mayor. Here’s to a future of collaboration and progress as we continue to build a community where everyone thrives. On December 16, we had the honor of celebrating former Mayor Kenn Weise and outgoing Councilmember Veronica Malone with a heartfelt reception. We’re proud to unveil our brand-new Gateway Monument Sign at Buckeye Rd. (MC 85) & Dysart Rd.! This stunning art installation, created in collaboration with the talented students at Agua Fria High School, is a beautiful blend of history and modernity. 🛻✨   The design celebrates Avondale’s colorful past as a stagecoach stop, with a nod to our Old West roots, while proudly showcasing the Avondale brand to let everyone know—you’ve arrived!   Thank you to the Agua Fria students and all who helped make this project a reality. 💙 Welcome to Avondale!

Last night, the City Council proudly presented a proclamation declaring November as Unified Responder Community Month to honor the critical work of first responders and their collaboration with community organizations like Sounds of Autism, Inc.  Unified Responder Community Month emphasizes the importance of uniting first responders, community leaders, and residents to create safer, more supportive environments, especially for individuals with special needs. Through programs like Responders Unite, Sounds of Autism builds awareness and offers training to help responders navigate complex interactions with care and understanding. We’re grateful to Sounds of Autism for their dedication to bridging gaps and fostering unity in our community.
