Around this time last year, we were preparing to launch the Dallas Catalyst Project in a new neighborhood – Mill City. The Real Estate Council (TREC) members selected the neighborhood in an organization-wide vote following a year of vetting applications, neighborhoods, and projects vying to succeed the Forest District. In January, we commenced a multi-year, $1 million partnership with Mill City Community Association, Builders of Hope Community Development Corporation, and The Urban Specialists to: 🚧improve public safety 🏞️create safe spaces for residents of all ages 🏙️remediate outdated infrastructure 🏚️make homeownership more accessible 🍎feed a food desert Following some initial hurdles, we’ve been able to make considerable progress in Year 1. The City of Needles Achieves Remarkable Success Securing Over $4.7 Million The City of Needles has recently secured an impressive $4,791,850.72 in grant funding, a significant milestone that reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to growth, sustainability, and community well-being. 🌟 Community Engagement Spotlight for #EconDevWeek 🌟 The PCDC has funded $250,000 in community engagement grants for Parks and Recreation improvements! 🌳 Shade structures at Black Locust Park and Pflugerville Heights Park help extend playtime, protect children from UV rays, and keep playgrounds cooler. With these upgrades, 25 citywide playgrounds now have shade. 🌤️ Improvements to Royal Pointe Park, including new shades, an upgraded basketball court, new swings, and hardware, rejuvenate the park system, lowering the average age of equipment to just 7.7 years! ❓Why are these upgrades important? Their Five-Year Consolidated Plan is a comprehensive document that outlines the City’s Housing market conditions, identifies the need for affordable housing and community development, and provides strategies to address these needs over a 5-year period. This plan coordinates the City’s housing and economic development plans with other public, private and nonprofit service providers to create a coordinated vision for community development and housing actions. The goals and outcomes of this plan were to provide decent and affordable housing, create and maintain a suitable living environment, and expand economic activity. The City of Dallas has reported that 138,915 residents have benefited from public facility improvements, 2,342 affordable housing units have been developed, and 117 homes have been rehabilitated. When the pandemic hit in 2020, small multifamily housing owners like William King in South LA feared losing their building, which he and three other neighbors called home. The innovative Local Rental Owners Collaborative, supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, not only allowed King to keep the property, but improve it as well. Together with the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, we supported 52 owners managing nearly 300 affordable units in Los Angeles.
