Our mission is to sustainably manage the water resources of California.
About us
In 1956, the Legislature passed a bill creating DWR to plan, design, construct, and oversee the building of the nation's largest state-built water development and conveyance system. Today, DWR protects, conserves, develops, and manages much of California's water supply including the State Water Project which provides water for 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland Working with other agencies and the public, DWR develops strategic goals, and near-term and long-term actions to conserve, manage, develop, and sustain California's watersheds, water resources, and management systems. DWR also works to prevent and respond to floods, droughts, and catastrophic events that would threaten public safety, water resources and management systems, the environment, and property. Balancing the State's water needs with environmental protection remains a long-term challenge.

The Groundwater Accounting Platform integrates satellite imagery, flow meters, and sensor networks to provide precise water budget tracking at the parcel level. This open-source data-driven approach gives water managers and landowners near real-time visibility into water availability and usage. As we celebrate #GroundwaterAwarenessWeek, we're proud that this technology is helping California's water managers make informed decisions during our state's most challenging climate conditions. 💧 Learn more: groundwateraccounting.org #WaterManagement #SGMA #Groundwater

The Central Valley’s flood system requires maintenance and monitoring all year around, especially after large storm events. DWR’s Sacramento and Sutter Maintenance Yards are responsible for keeping many of the weirs and bypasses that protect communities across the Sacramento Valley clear of debris so they can safely move high water through the flood system. Last week, DWR staff from the Sutter Maintenance Yard cleared significant storm debris that had accumulated along the Colusa Weir which diverts highwater off the Sacramento River and providing flood protection and ecosystem benefits. #Sacramento #Storm #ColusaWeir #CentralValley

In 2022, DWR launched the LandFlex Program - a first of its kind partnership with farmers to protect groundwater supplies. For Groundwater Awareness Week 2025, we wanted to highlight the multiple successes of LandFlex. When it comes to community wells, LandFlex immediately protected 16,512 home domestic wells in 6 critically overdrafted basins. This means more, clean drinking water for California’s frontline communities that rely on wells. Happy #GroundwaterAwarenessWeek! Did you know groundwater provides 40 percent of the state’s water supply in a normal year, and up to 60 percent or more in dry years? This Groundwater Awareness Week, we are showing our appreciation for how the fresh groundwater that is hidden just below our feet, is used for public supply, private supply, irrigation, livestock, manufacturing, mining, thermoelectric power, and other purposes.
