About us
In 1991, California's environmental authority was unified in a single Cabinet level agency—the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). Our mission is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality. We fulfill our mission by developing, implementing and enforcing the state's environmental protection laws that regulate clean air, clean water, clean soil, safe pesticides and waste recycling and reduction. Our departments are at the forefront of environmental science, using cutting-edge research to shape the state's environmental laws. The Office of the Secretary heads CalEPA and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of one office, two boards, and three departments dedicated to improving California’s environment: Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Air Resources Board State Water Resources Control Board Department of Pesticide Regulation Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery Department of Toxic Substances Control

Heat is not just a weather inconvenience—it is a dangerous climate hazard affecting all Californians today. As climate change continues, and temperatures rise across the state, communities are feeling the worsening impacts of extreme heat. The California Communities Extreme Heat Scoring System (CalHeatScore) is a public health tool for individuals, communities, decisionmakers, policymakers, and researchers seeking up-to-date information about heat events and resources to keep individuals and communities safe. OEHHA is conducting a public engagement session and seeking feedback to refine and improve CalHeatScore. We invite community members, local and Tribal governments, researchers, nongovernmental organizations, and others to share their ideas and input. Join us on March 5, 2025 in the Klamath Room in the CalEPA building in Sacramento, or on Zoom at the link below. Register now at: https://lnkd.in/gi3KmXfN

A recent storm put the state-funded Tijuana River Channel trash booms pilot project to the test, and it surpassed expectations. The project stopped 50 tons of trash from flowing into the U.S., far more than the anticipated 20 tons. https://lnkd.in/gC-vvzTU SB 170 funded the $4.7 million pilot project through the State Water Board's Division of Financial Assistance. The project aims to intercept tires, washing machines and other debris that flow from Mexico into the Tijuana River, clogging the channel and contributing to chronic water quality problems.
