Welp, make that a corrupted CD!

Having done a file compare between the file on the CD and the resource.aud from the GOG version, there is a difference, but only in that file, everything else on the CD matches GOG's version. The difference runs entirely from 018C3800 to 018C3FFF. Exactly 2048 bytes, which is too round a binary number to be a coincidence, and it is the sector size of a CD-ROM. So there is probably a single corrupt sector on my CD (or the master it was built from)!

In my CD's version, the 303 consecutive bytes at offset 018C3ED1..018C3FFF all have value FF, which is obviously wrong. I'll just use the GOG copy then, and apply the patch to that!

Although the date and time match, the MD5 hash of my file is 510ed31b0b3c5a33bd822f5db290e00c.

I found that very unusual, because of the matching date and time. So I also did the checksum on the original CD, thinking it might have gotten corrupted on my hard drive, but the version on the CD has 510ed31b0b3c5a33bd822f5db290e00c too.

It could of course be a dodgy CD, but I've been able to play through the game itself without issues. Have attached a photo of the CD (which has the number "S0010304" on it), just so you might be able to see if it is indeed a different release somehow (I'm in the Netherlands - perhaps there is a European version that's different from the US one)?

Great work. It doesn't seem to apply on my Sierra Originals version, unfortunately.

Yeah! Tried it again and didn't encounter any of these issues again!

Game jams can get pretty hectic! Glad you were able to fix them :)

Great stuff! The atmosphere is great, and the music really plays a part in making the reveals very effective. I posted a list of bugs on the main game page (nothing breaking a first playthrough, though you can't restart a game without it getting seriously messed up)

Really nicely done. The sudden shift in tone was really quite effective.

Few minor issues I encountered:

.

.

.

.

. empty lines to keep from spoiling

.

.

.

.

  • the "3 commandments" and "closed chest" are hotspots, but there are no labels for them (oddly enough, the chest has one, but only when opened)
  • the "mess" and "broken pestle & mortar" hotspots are available right from the start
  • a few issues with draw ordering:
    • the cake coming through the opening gets drawn on top of the opening
    • when the anchorite is sitting at his desk, writing on the parchment, the parchment is drawn on top of the anchorite
    • the shovel does not seem to go into the ground, but draws on top of the wood surrounding the garden bed
  • several "you can't do that" style messages appear erroneously (like when actually doing the thing you're supposed to do):
    • when digging up the garden to plant the seeds
    • when putting the clothes in the tub
    • when putting the bucket under the pump
    • when dropping the water into the tub with the clothes
    • when using the inkwell with ashes on the water in the bucket
  • Typo: I won"t be able to get all of the dirt out with just water should probably have a ' instead of a "
  • restarting the game (to try out what happens when choosing a different option at the end) results in glitching out almost everything:
    • I have the inkwell, quill and knife already in inventory at the start
    • the cake is already in the room when the young anchorite wakes up
    • Amos's blue text is by the anchorite's head, rather than by the door
    • Amos's sprite can be seen drawn on top of the door and he becomes an interactible hotspot... I can actually ask him the same questions I can in the control room:
    • from here the game is too glitched out to be able to get further, I had to quit and relaunch the game to be able to do a second playthrough

I love the aesthetic and atmosphere. The writing is funny, and it all looks and sounds great! Really looking forward to seeing how the story goes on.

Great work, team! It may be short, but what is there is well-written, funny, and looks and sounds great and has a great level of polish already!

Really cool game with nice puzzles and quirky sense of humour. I love the art style, especially. You definitely got the Day of the Tentacle vibe in both the backgrounds and the character sprites. Hope to see more of Yip Quest in the future.

Yay, things are back to normal :)

Glad you got things fixed, Honza!

Happy to hear that you enjoyed it. Thanks for playing and for sharing the video!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed :)

Thank you! The controls were a bit of an experiment because of the unusual protagonist!

Hehe, it is actually based on a real life story. I'm happy you had fun playing the game!

Thank you for the compliment. So glad you enjoyed it!

I'm afraid a Linux build is not really an option for this, as the game was built purely for Windows and a large section of the code is specific to that operating system. I'm rather surprised that it wouldn't work in Wine, though, as I have used Wine with it in the past.

Definitely makes sense this way. It is much more obvious that there is something that should be done with the screw hole.

Nice work! On my first playthrough, the screw hole screwed me over too :D Looking forward to trying this new version and the full game in the future!

This feels very much like one of my favourite games ever... Silpheed. Very nicely done shoot-em-up!

That's so cute. Quite enjoyed it!

Quite ambitious to make a game with switchable characters for a game jam. The game is quite funny and I had several laugh-out-loud moments. Well done, Ramón! A few things could be a little more clearly signposted, but it shouldn't pose a major obstacle to reaching the end of this charming game. The ending (and post-credits bonus scene) were especially hilarious. Big thumbs up from me!

I'm saddened that it didn't bring the success the developer had hoped for, as this game is very well made and it deserves better. And being given away for free means you can't beat the price, of course. Yes, it's very short and the gameplay isn't overly taxing, but it's highly atmospheric... creepy and mysterious.

a Royal Midnight Snack

Gorgeous artwork. And I actually found myself getting engrossed in the stories too.

Vampires hate garlic... And please note that the garter is elastic.

Great work as always! The graphics are amazing, the puzzles are good and sensible and the story is epic. The resolution is satisfying and it's worth trying multiple things to get all three of the endings.

The black and white art reminds me a bit of the first Hypercard games for the Mac. Quite a cool Alice in Wonderland vibe you have going on there without falling into the Disneyfied version.

I've tried to play it twice. Both times I was unable to get the Light Step as there was no hot spot on it. The first time, in my attempts to get it, I accidentally triggered the door to the ship again and the camera got stuck in the view of the ship from the outside and stopped tracking the protagonist. In the second time I played it, I made sure to avoid that, but still couldn't get the Light Step. Took a long time to get around, but couldn't really find anything after finding the map markers and reporting back to the mayor, so I gave up :(

Very cool that you have multiple endings. Perhaps even split that up into three, depending on where you go with one ending.

Quite a clever game, with rather more story than I would have expected from a platform puzzler.

That was pretty hilarious. Would be cool to be able to go through the game again and try different things without accidentally winning after making it into the cockpit for the first time.

Unfortunately, I hadn't noticed this game before the voting ended. It's really good and quite well made! Needed the walkthrough to notice that the king was all the way up there in the throne room.

Heel origineel concept met het gaandeweg uitbreiden van de acties en het ziet er ook fantastisch uit!

Intriguing idea. It's hilarious to read the variations of the story cards, and the audience reviews.

Thanks, Honza!

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

Hehe, that's one of the things I intend to address in a post-jam update. Thanks for the compliments!

Thank you, Ramón!

Thanks so much!
