Raible’s comments are as applicable to a Marine combat pilot providing close air support to dusty infantrymen in combat as they are to a computer engineer supporting a product rollout from an air-conditioned office. • Continually seek self-improvement. • Do the right thing, even when no one is watching. • And always strive for greatness, regardless of the mission. Following these three simple rules all but guarantees success.

First, let me provide you with some historical context that is near and dear to many, including myself: https://lnkd.in/gRz9uTgF LtCol Raible’s Commander’s Guidance can be applied in any setting and situation. True leadership is transferable to any job, in any industry, military or civilian sector. All 6 principles are direct and clear to the point. I, wholeheartedly believe them to all be of equal importance and value. From my personal observations of working in the civilian sector thus far, principle #6 is a definite opportunity to improve upon. “When all else fades away, attack pilots have one mission: provide offensive air support for Marines.” This statement clearly identifies the main objective (“the job”) and who they support. I think every Soldier or military service member has this, initially. In my experience as the S3 OIC of three SeaPorts in Kuwait, I definitely have never planned or oversaw port operations in my life. One of the things that I learned is that I (you) are selected to lead because you are the best of the best of your peers and your Commander chose you because they knew you have the competence and ability to learn a totally new skill set and have the humility to learn and acknowledge that you have a lot to learn. The second thing I learned was to always trust your senior Non-Commissioned Officers. Trust your specialists who have been operating at the level that you want everyone else to operate. Use them. Empower them. Ensure they know you trust them and rely on them for answers and operational success. When you put well-earned confidence and trust in your subordinates and superiors together, you become a deadly force. Your peers and operational partners view you as an asset and Soldiers will come to YOU to address and help figure out problems. The day that your Soldiers and Bosses stop coming to you when problems arise, you have lost your value to the organization. Be Bold. Trust in yourself and others. Do the thing! Whatever the thing is, put your best foot forward. #HappyNewYear

Have you ever had Imposter Syndrome? Major Kirk Dorr, Major John Reynolds and I graduated together from the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth a few years ago. Three weeks later, we joined the 1st Infantry Division in Germany as Division Planners. Right after our arrival, the 1st Infantry Division received orders to deploy from Germany to Iraq. Almost immediately, Kirk sent me on the initial reconnaissance mission to Iraq with Major General John Batiste, the Division Commander. Word on the street is that recruiting is down, the Global War on Terror generation of soldiers is retiring, and SOF has been directed to cut personnel. Fran Racioppi challenged the U.S. Army John F. Are we meeting the recruiting numbers? The answer depends on who we ask; but no matter the answer, the reality is that the numbers need to be higher and the quality cannot be lessened. CSM Dave Waldo and CW5 Felix Mosqueda are part of the command team of 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) - US Army; the headqquarters responsible for manning, training and equipping Green Berets, Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Forces.
