Standards for a Sustainable Future

About us

Verra works to provide standards for a sustainable future that address pressing environmental and sustainable development issues. Through robust standards, we help accurately quantify benefits and drive investment in responsible, high-performing projects and programs. We work closely with partners in civil society, governments and the private sector to develop novel frameworks and enable results on the ground. Our flagship standard, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, is the longstanding leading standard in the voluntary carbon market. Since our start in 2009, Verra has expanded our work into new arenas based on increasing demand for social and environmental standards. Today, a growing staff with operatives around the world manage our standards and programs, including the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard, the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard and the Landscape Standard. We consistently work with our partners to ensure that our existing and new requirements reflect the most current knowledge and global best practice. We are steadily expanding the scope of Verra to respond to the need for new, forward-thinking standards, with a focus on market-based, workable solutions to thorny social and environmental challenges. Verra was originally founded by a collection of business and environmental leaders who saw a need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Our founding partners - The Climate Group, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and The World Economic Forum - convened a team of global carbon market experts to draft the first Verified Carbon Standard requirements. World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) joined the effort soon after.

🫕Why is the installation of clean cookstoves important for advancing climate action, and why are the voluntary carbon market and Verra's new cookstoves methodology important in this context? 🔎 Read our latest Verra Views article to find out: https://bit.ly/4gpt52e ⌚ Short on time? Here is a quick summary: 1️⃣ Installing clean cookstoves is one of the most effective and beneficial ways to deliver climate action—along with many additional benefits for local communities. Clean cooking solutions result in quick and reliable emission reductions while also greatly improving people’s lives by protecting human health, greening the environment, and boosting socioeconomic well-being (e.g., reducing the time and labor needed for cooking). 2️⃣ The implementation of clean cooking solutions depends on climate finance. The vast majority of clean cookstove users live in countries where finance to purchase and install these tools is scarce. Finance from carbon credits is the sole source of funding for many improved cookstove projects. 3️⃣ Verra’s new cookstoves methodology (VM0050) uses advanced and robust carbon accounting methods for quantifying the emission reductions from the use of clean cookstoves. Selling the carbon credits representing this impact can catalyze the needed finance for cookstove projects. VM0050 reflects best practices of project design and implementation. It addresses aspects that have recently been publicly criticized and incorporates streamlined monitoring approaches, scientifically robust methods of determining key parameters, and updated default values for various ex ante parameters. 💡 Project spotlight! 📢 “If you wish to achieve financial stability through farming, I encourage you to plant at least one acre of mahogany," says Pravin Atmaram Jadhav, a smallholder farmer in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Jadhav is part of the Mahogany Plantation in India Project, which has transformed the lives of 4,000 farmers and led to the planting of 3.1 million mahogany trees. ✅ Registered with Verra's Verified Carbon Standard Program, the project implements Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) activities. The trees remove carbon from the air, and for each tonne of carbon removed, a carbon credit is issued and sold on the global voluntary carbon market. For every carbon credit sold, the farmers receive 70% of the profit, which supplements their income. Before Mahogani Vishwa Agro Limited developed the project, smallholder farmers in many districts across India were struggling to support themselves and their families through traditional farming methods. 🌱 Now, participating farmers are able to provide for their families through practicing sustainable agroforestry across numerous small land parcels. By planting mahogany trees alongside their crops, the farmers experience increased crop yields, improved soil quality, and enhanced biodiversity preservation, among other benefits. The project also contributes to 13 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, working to reduce poverty, eliminate hunger, promote good health and well-being, and much more. ➡️ Learn more about this incredible project and the farmers whose lives it has changed: https://bit.ly/4hpSOc4 #Verra #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #CarbonMarkets #Agroforestry #SustainableDevelopment

🫕Verra has issued corrections and clarifications to Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Methodology VM0050 Energy Efficiency and Fuel-Switch Measures in Cookstoves, v1.0. The corrections and clarifications are effective as of February 3, 2025. 📆 ➡️ These changes have been made to more closely align the methodology with the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) assessment framework published by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). They also increase alignment between VM0050 and the Comprehensive Lowered Emissions Assessment and Reporting (CLEAR) Methodology for Cooking Energy Transitions, which has been developed by the Clean Cooking Alliance-led Clean Cooking and Climate Consortium and which was released in December 2024. 🔎 The clarifications pertain to monitoring/measurement requirements, characterizing stove condition, and others. The correction the frequency of follow-up baseline surveys to every five years (at most) rather than two years. Happy World Wetlands Day! Wetlands are vitally important ecosystems that provide countless benefits, including habitat for biodiversity, livelihood opportunities, and climate change mitigation. Yet these systems continue to be lost rapidly, due in part to insufficient financing for wetland conservation. Oftentimes, the reason is that economic incentives for draining wetlands are stronger than incentives that support the conservation of wetlands. Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program includes several methodologies that projects can use to quantify the emission reductions and removals resulting from activities that conserve and restore coastal and inland wetland ecosystems. After verification and approval, Verra will issue carbon credits to projects, and projects can then sell these credits on the open market, enabling them to maintain and even further scale these activities. These methodologies not only enable the protection of critical wetland habitats, but they also show a new path forward by transforming how we value these ecosystems. By helping to make heathy wetlands valuable, these approaches contribute to building a more sustainable future.
