On This Day in 1958: The U.S. Entered the Space Age! 66 years ago, Explorer 1 became the first successfully launched U.S. satellite, marking a historic milestone in space exploration. Designed, built, and operated by JPL, this mission was America’s swift response to Sputnik 1, propelling the nation into the space race. Explorer 1 carried a cosmic ray detector, which led to the groundbreaking discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, thanks to the work of Principal Investigator Dr. James Van Allen.
