Federal Investments Needed to Sustain Eastern Monarch Population Increase 🦋📈 An increase in the eastern monarch butterfly population is uplifting news, but the species needs urgent local and federal action to continue this trajectory and stave off future declines. The latest species status assessment states that the eastern monarch population's extinction probability ranges from 48 percent to 69 percent within the next 60 years. “The latest population numbers of the eastern monarch are encouraging news, but we cannot lose focus or the hard-fought momentum we’ve gained in our efforts to save the monarch butterfly,” said Dr. Rebeca Quiñonez-Piñón, senior scientist for the National Wildlife Federation. People and wildlife depend on common-sense policies rooted in sound science. 🦅 As a nonpartisan, science-based, and collaborative organization, we know that climate change, deforestation, declining wildlife populations, and other environmental challenges are urgent global problems for people and wildlife that transcend politics and borders. Turning away from science will hurt people and wildlife. Will you sign the pledge to #StandUpForScience? 📲 https://lnkd.in/eYhe7uhz

Monarch butterflies create lifelong memories. 🦋 In this episode of YourForest Podcast, host Matthew Kristoff, RPF talks with Rebeca Quiñonez-Piñón about the deep emotional connection people have with monarch butterflies, why they matter beyond beauty, and what their decline means for conservation. Monarchs aren’t just insects-they’re part of our memories. For many, seeing them in childhood was one of the first experiences of connecting with nature. That bond sticks with us, making monarchs more than just a species at risk. But nostalgia alone won’t save them. Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change are driving their decline. Protecting monarchs isn’t just about preserving a beautiful butterfly-it’s about maintaining the ecosystems we all rely on. Conservation isn’t just for scientists. It starts with anyone who values nature enough to take action. 🎧 Listen to the full episode today: https://lnkd.in/gvdJq-3C #MonarchButterfly #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #NatureConnection #EnvironmentalPolicy
