Advancements in AI, smart technology, and innovative care models are set to drive equitable healthcare in 2025 by improving access, reducing disparities, and enhancing patient outcomes for underserved populations. Watching a loved one experience sudden cognitive decline can be startling and overwhelming, especially when symptoms like confusion, memory loss, and/or balance issues appear rapidly. Although rapidly progressing dementia is uncommon, Linus Health Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer Alvaro Pascual-Leone says if you or a loved one show symptoms, see a medical provider as soon as possible. Compared with typical dementia, in rapidly progressive dementia: ▶️ The start of symptoms leads to a faster official dementia diagnosis. ▶️ There is a quicker timeline between symptom onset to death. ▶️ There are more rapidly decreasing scores in cognitive testing, such as the mini-mental state examination, a common dementia evaluation tool. Newly published evidence adds to the growing body of literature demonstrating significant gaps in cognitive care across the U.S. and troubling indicators of continued care inequities. A study published this month in the JGIM Journal of General Internal Medicine found that 81% of participants with probable dementia were unaware of their dementia diagnosis. Even more troubling, there appears to be a health equity gap: Among different cohorts studied, 85% of Mexican-Americans were unaware of such a diagnosis compared to only 68% of non-Hispanic white participants. Cholesterol is often associated with heart health, but new research in the Journal of Clinical Medicine highlights the potential of HDL, or "good" cholesterol, in preserving brain health as we age. With neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s on the rise, the study tracked over 1,800 adults for seven years, finding that higher HDL function and smaller particle size were linked to greater gray matter volume and cognitive capacity. HDL’s ability to clear cholesterol and potentially cross the blood-brain barrier may contribute to protecting brain tissue. However, experts like Linus Health Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer Alvaro Pascual-Leone, MD, PhD, caution that “it’s difficult to pinpoint whether HDL—or external factors—are responsible for preserving gray matter volume.” He also emphasizes that optimizing vascular function can make a difference, explaining, “If you optimize the vascular function, you’re going to—in the presence of another illness—still be able to function better than expected.” While further research is needed, maintaining heart health through regular exercise, a Mediterranean diet, and effective cholesterol management remains a proven way to support brain health. https://lnkd.in/gK8A9XKP I #ChronicDisease #Dementia #MildCognitiveImpairment #BrainHealth #DementiaPrevention

The link between mental health and cognitive health is well-established. However, a new study in Nature Mental Health by an international group of researchers, including our Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder Alvaro Pascual-Leone, has identified three distinct psychological profiles associated with differing risk levels of developing dementia. The three psychological profiles, based on data from more than 1,000 participants ranging in age from approximately 51 to 71, were: #1: Low-protective characteristics: Negative perspectives on life, including lack of purpose, conscientiousness, openness and extraversion. #2: High-risk characteristics: Highest reported levels/symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness and poor quality sleep. #3: Well-balanced characteristics: Fewer negative mental health symptoms and higher protective characteristics. Profiles #1 and #2 showed higher risks of developing dementia, although #2 was more likely to report memory and cognition problems. Additional study of these profiles is needed, but researchers agreed that these findings highlight the importance of conducting comprehensive psychological evaluations, including both assessment of risk as well as protective factors, when estimating an individual’s risk profile. https://lnkd.in/g7MVPqGu | #MentalHealth #Dementia #MildCognitiveImpairment #PersonCentered #DementiaPrevention

Dementia cases in the U.S. are expected to double in the next four decades, a new analysis suggests. Based on U.S. Census data, the number of adults who will develop dementia each year was projected to increase from about 514,000 in 2020 to 1 million in 2060, researchers reported in Nature Portfolio. Amid these startling projections for Alzheimer's and other dementias, it’s never been more critical to find new ways to detect and address cognitive issues early.
