An exciting GE Vernova announcement today includes highlighting the investment of more than $50 million to enhance safety, quality and productivity at our Wilmington, NC fuel fabrication facility. We’ve been manufacturing fuel at the facility since 1968 and today our fuel powers much of the U.S. boiling water reactor fleet. A fuel design that we manufacture today will power the BWRX-300 small modular reactor. The investment will also support the launch of our next generation nuclear fuel design and strongly positions us for the future as the demand for nuclear energy increases globally.
As the leading American energy manufacturing company, GE Vernova are proud to do our part, today announcing nearly $600 million in planned investments in our U.S. factories over the next two years, which we expect will create more than 1,500 new U.S. jobs. With global energy demand projected to double in coming years, the need for an “all of the above” energy strategy to provide affordable, reliable and abundant U.S. energy has never been more clear. As the leading American energy manufacturing company, GE Vernova are proud to do our part, today announcing nearly $600 million in planned investments in our U.S. factories over the next two years, which we expect will create more than 1,500 new U.S. jobs. We are ready to power the increased demand coming from AI and data centers, along with expanded advanced manufacturing across the country. It’s why we are expanding our gas turbine manufacturing capacity at our Greenville, SC, factory. GE Vernova’s nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, plans to invest at its Wilmington, NC site to enhance safety, quality and productivity and to launch its next generation nuclear fuel design, a critical component to the company’s small modular reactor, the BWRX-300. At our Pittsburgh, PA facility, we’re creating a new manufacturing line to support growing demand in solar farms and energy storage. We also continue to invest in our onshore wind business, including in Pensacola, FL, Grand Rapids, ND, Amarillo, TX, and Schenectady, NY. And we continue to build out the best-in-class Advanced Research Center in Niskayuna, NY, where we are investing cutting in edge technologies, including direct air capture, alternative fuels for power generation, the grid of the future, and critical infrastructure security. These are the largest investments since we became an independent company last year, and they make clear we are bullish on the future. They will help us meet soaring customer demand, strengthen domestic supply chains, and continue developing cutting-edge American technology that helps power the world. Another milestone for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor as we announced today that we have awarded a contract to BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) to manufacture the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for the first BWRX-300 at the Ontario Power Generation Darlington New Nuclear project site. The RPV is the largest component within the BWRX-300. “The contract to fabricate the reactor pressure vessel for the first BWRX-300 is another key milestone in the deployment of this technology,” said Lisa McBride, MA (Lead), Canada Country Leader, GEH. “We are excited to be working with BWXT to move this project forward, while bringing benefits to manufacturing workers in Ontario.” GEH previously awarded a contract to BWXT for RPV-related engineering analysis, design support and manufacturing and procurement preparations. A big day for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor! Tennessee Valley Authority, along with a coalition of U.S. utilities and supply chain partners including GEH, announced today that they have applied for $800 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate deployment of small modular reactors and the BWRX-300. This impressive coalition includes Bechtel Corporation, BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT), Duke Energy Corporation, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), GEH, Indiana Michigan Power – an AEP company, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Sargent & Lundy, Scot Forge, other utilities and advanced nuclear project developers and the State of Tennessee. “Nuclear power has a key role to play in reaching a cleaner and more secure energy future,” said Scott Strazik, CEO, GE Vernova. “Funding from this grant would play a critical role in the path forward and we look forward to working with TVA and this strong team of utility and supply chain partners to accelerate the roll-out of small modular reactors in the United States.” TVA has selected the BWRX-300 for potential deployment at the Clinch River Site and, if awarded this funding, plans to accelerate construction of the first SMR at the site by two years with commercial operation planned for 2033. There were two related announcements today. Duke Energy has entered into an agreement to invest in activities to advance the standard design and licensing of the BWRX-300. We are proud to have Duke Energy involved in our BWRX-300 project and welcome the insights and expertise they bring to the team. Also today, American Electric Power announced that it has selected the BWRX-300 for potential deployment at the Indiana Michigan Power Rockport Plant in Spencer County, Indiana. With its small footprint, the BWRX-300 is ideally suited to help AEP provide its customers with reliable, secure energy. “On the heels of the significant progress that is occurring with the deployment of the first BWRX-300 at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project site, these announcements signify the growing confidence the industry has in our SMR technology,” said Maví Zingoni, CEO, GE Vernova's Power businesses.
