Creating breakthrough technologies for national security.

About us

DARPA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense with a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. The Agency explicitly reaches for transformational change instead of incremental advances. To do so, it works within an innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate and governmental partners, with a constant focus on the Nation’s military Services, which work with DARPA to create new strategic opportunities and novel tactical options. DARPA comprises approximately 220 government employees in six technical offices, including nearly 100 program managers, who together oversee about 250 research and development programs. DARPA goes to great lengths to identify, recruit and support excellent program managers—extraordinary individuals who are at the top of their fields and are hungry for the opportunity to push the limits of their disciplines. These leaders, who are at the very heart of DARPA’s history of success, come from academia, industry and government agencies for limited stints, generally three to five years. That deadline fuels the signature DARPA urgency to achieve success in less time than might be considered reasonable in a conventional setting. Program managers address challenges broadly, spanning the spectrum from deep science to systems to capabilities, but ultimately they are driven by the desire to make a difference. They define their programs, set milestones, meet with their performers and assiduously track progress. But they are also constantly probing for the next big thing in their fields, communicating with leaders in the scientific and engineering community to identify new challenges and potential solutions. DARPA is always on the lookout for outstanding individuals who can meet our demanding needs in the Agency’s technical and support offices. Interested individuals may submit a resume/CV to employment@darpa.mil.

EEI pairs top technical talent with business leaders to accelerate commercialization, providing hands-on support, go-to-market expertise, and strategies to help your innovation succeed in both government and commercial sectors. This event is an opportunity to: · Learn how EEI supports commercialization success through real-world examples · Engage in one-on-one meetings with the Commercial Strategy team · Get your questions answered about funding and commercialization pathways Register by February 18, 2025, at 3 p.m. ET, to secure your spot! https://lnkd.in/eNk5rcZb Further information can be found on the DARPA website: https://lnkd.in/e6a8gqht As well as in the Special Notice on SAM.gov: https://lnkd.in/e7JS7N7N

  • Money laundering isn’t just a financial crime, it’s a national security threat. Illicit money moves in the shadows, harming American citizens and global stability. But here’s the challenge: today’s anti-money laundering efforts often rely on manual analysis, which can be slow, reactive, and expensive. DARPA’s Anticipatory and Adaptive Anti-Money Laundering (A3ML) program intends to flip the script on bad actors by creating new technology, such as: ✅ Machine learning-powered detection – Algorithms that sift through massive financial #transactiongraphs ✅ Adaptive learning – Systems that evolve to detect emerging laundering techniques ✅ Human + Machine synergy – Insights that are machine-readable and human-understandable Resulting tech could lower compliance costs and risks for industry, increase the accuracy and precision of illicit finance data available to the U.S. government, and drastically reduce the sharing of Americans’ sensitive financial information. 📅 For those interested in proposing to A3ML, the deadline to register for the A3ML Proposers Day is February 10 at 5:00 p.m. ET. • 🕒 Precision timing technologies underpin essential Department of Defense (DoD) capabilities including positioning, navigation, and communications. The current system of time standards, synchronization, and dissemination of time is based on stabilization of atomic clocks to microwave transitions and microwave-domain time transfer techniques. While such microwave-domain techniques have enabled nanosecond-scale timing stability at high levels of technological maturity, it is unlikely that these techniques will sustain further performance enhancements. Furthermore, the vulnerabilities of such techniques to jamming, spoofing, and other forms of interference are well established. DARPA’s recently announced SUNSPOT (Sources for Ultraviolet Nuclear Spectroscopy of Thorium) program aims to develop a key enabling technology for the realization of a thorium-based nuclear clock — a coherent laser source in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. DARPA is soliciting innovative proposals in the development of highly coherent sources of VUV radiation for clock-grade spectroscopy of the recently discovered thorium (229mTh) nuclear isomeric transition. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. • #Nature provides inspiration for many advanced robotic technologies — think of quadruped or biped robots that are being applied in a variety of commercial and defense applications. Even as synthetic — or abiotic — robotic systems become increasingly sophisticated, their system-level performance cannot match the performance of their biological counterparts. Recent advancements in — coupled with the convergence of — engineering and biology have propelled the development of biohybrid robots, which combine biological and synthetic components. #Biohybrid systems could have distinct advantages over traditional synthetic robots in some operational contexts. While fully engineered abiotic systems prioritize controllability and precision for on-demand performance, biological systems inherently excel in their resiliency, sensitivity, adaptability, and efficiency. Biohybrid robots aim to combine the best features of both realms by leveraging the precise control of engineered parts while harnessing the unique, innate capabilities of biological elements. Successfully integrating biological components (e.g., cells, tissues, or organisms) could extend the functionality of robotic systems. DARPA recently announced an Advanced Research Concepts (ARC) topic called HyBRIDS—short for Hybridizing Biology and Robotics through Integration for Deployable Systems. HyBRIDS aims to answer this question: How can synthetic and biological components be integrated to enable biohybrid platforms that outperform traditional robotic systems? A HyBRIDS information webinar for interested proposers will be held Feb. 4, 2025. Visit the following HyBRIDS page for webinar registration link & link to the full HyBRIDS solicitation: https://lnkd.in/dCZF33eJ #Biohybrid, #Bioengineering, #Biorobotics, and #LivingMachines About ARC: DARPA’s ARC program rapidly solicits and explores a high volume of promising new ideas for limited-scope investments. Projects focus on answering high-risk/high-reward questions and assessing the impact of further investment on problems of importance to the Department of Defense. Use of animal subjects in the proposed research is prohibited. To learn more about all open ARC topics, visit www.darpa.mil/ARC *edited for capitalization and hashtags.

  • Attention firmware developers and computer scientists! Registration for the Reclaiming Bus-based Systems During Compromise (Red-C) program is now open. The hybrid event takes place January 28. 📅Deadline to Register is January 23. 🚍Understanding the Bus: DARPA experts say self-healing computers can become a reality by addressing missing forensic data on the bus – a communication system that transfers data between components – and leveraging advancements in Zero Trust . Many critical systems are bus-based with implicitly trusted modular components. Simply detecting and alerting of a cyber-attack – as most antivirus software works today – does not sufficiently protect the computer system. Instead, Red-C will explore retrofitting firmware to add forensic sensing, which refers to the ability to collect and analyze data for investigative purposes, so the various components can monitor each other like a neighborhood watch. The sensing and monitoring for infection would enable on-system detection, repair, and inoculation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eTbV5B9k #firmware #cyber #DARPA #innovation
