The Costume Society of America advances the global understanding of all aspects of dress and appearance. We work to stimulate scholarship and encourage study in the rich and diverse field of costume. The Costume Society of America advances the global understanding of all aspects of dress and appearance. We value five major purposes: To stimulate scholarship and encourage study in the rich and diverse field of costume. To disseminate information on dress and appearance. To raise the profile and credibility of the field of costume. To network among our members and with other people and organizations having costume interests. To manage and govern the organization to serve the membership. We serve individuals, students, institutions, and libraries. Our primary membership consists of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, both generalist and specialist, who share a passion for the history and serious study of costume. We seek members who are involved in the study, education, collection, and preservation, presentation, and interpretation of dress and appearance in our PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE societies.

  • 📢  Registration is now open! The 51st Annual Meeting & Symposium of the Costume Society of America is happening in Los Angeles, CA, from June 1-5, 2025! The Costume Society of America & Western Region will host this year’s symposium at Loyola Marymount University, exploring the theme: "Innovation: The Art, Craft, History, Technology, and Diaspora of Dress." This event will bring together scholars, industry professionals, and enthusiasts to discuss the diasporic history of fashion, costume, dress, and appearance practices through the lenses of culture, production, materiality, technological inventiveness, and performance in all forms. 📌 Highlights include: ✅ Keynote by Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E.   • Call for student poster submissions! 📣   The Costume Society of America and the Avenir Museum Design and Merchandising at Colorado State University are partnering to bring a one-day event to the CSA Southwestern region. The event is centered around the Avenir Museum’s current exhibition Tiger’s Leap: Fashion Past, Present, Future. The event program will include guest speakers, a student poster session, behind-the-scenes tours, exhibition viewing, and dedicated time to gather and network with professionals working across fashion history, costume design, and museum curation and conservation!   The organizing committee is inviting abstract submissions for the student poster session. Posters can include ongoing, current or recently completed research on any topic that aligns with the mission of the Costume Society of America, to “foster an understanding of appearance and dress practices of people across the globe through research, education, preservation, and design.
