Exciting news! The multi-partner Hallwood Side Channel and Floodplain Restoration Project has earned the American Society of Civil Engineers California “Outstanding Environmental Project Award!" The honor will be presented next month at the ASCE Region 9 awards ceremony recognizing the very best in civil engineering across the state. Completed in late 2023, the Hallwood Project restored 157 acres of habitat in the lower Yuba River, creating a healthier environment for salmon and other native fish. Recent monitoring shows that native fish are thriving at the site. Another project benefit? It reduces flood risk for Yuba County communities. More than three million cubic yards of old hydraulic mining sediment was removed throughout the project area as part of the restoration, which lowers water surface elevations during large storms. A huge thank you to all our partners who made this incredible project possible: cbec eco engineering, a Verdantas Company, Cramer Fish Sciences, South Yuba River Citizens League, Teichert, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), California Natural Resources Agency and Wildlife Conservation Board

Excited to see what cbec, Verdantas, and geoSieve can achieve together! #technologytuesday 💻
It's #technologytuesday 💻 and we're shining a spotlight on geoSieve! Developed by cbec eco engineering, a Verdantas Company, geoSieve is a user-friendly computational workflow that leverages Meta AI's Segment Anything Model to extract pebble count-style grain size distributions from images of gravel. Utilizing underwater riverbed photographs collected via boat in tandem with high-accuracy RTK GPS coordinates, geoSieve produces continuous maps of riverbed grain size in areas of fast-moving water that are otherwise inaccessible with traditional pebble count or sediment sampling techniques. Since its development, geoSieve has provided valuable sediment characteristics for applications in hydrodynamic modeling, sediment transport, and geomorphology. Furthermore, it has played a crucial role in assessing the availability of suitable spawning habitat for California salmonids such as Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout. With geoSieve, we're pushing the boundaries of innovation, delivering unparalleled solutions that enhance efficiency and precision in even the most challenging environments. ✨

The recently completed Hallwood Side Channel and Floodplain Restoration Project will be honored with the “Outstanding Environmental Project Award” at April’s ASCE Region 9 award ceremony. This prestigious honor recognizes projects that have previously won at the ASCE Section level in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego, and distinguishes the very best in civil engineering across the state of California. This Central Valley project is turning back the clock on the Yuba River’s gold mining history and resetting the equilibrium between natural river functioning and native fish survival. Guided through its phased implementation by cbec, a Verdantas company, this project is the culmination of over 12 years of collaboration between local, state, and federal proponents. #cbecHallwood Thank you to the project team and other supporters that brought this innovative project to fruition: Cramer Fish Sciences South Yuba River Citizens League Teichert Yuba Water Agency U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) California Natural Resources Agency
