At SYRCL’s 23rd annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival, the films Mollie’s Pack and Among the Wolves connected audiences with wolf stories from Wyoming to Russia. Meanwhile, California wolves continue to roam south, likely into the upper reaches of the Yuba River watershed. Let’s check in with the wildlife continuing to inspire in our own backyard. https://buff.ly/QjRsxcP

WHAT IN THE WATERSHED? Meet the BEAKED HAZELNUT -- Corylus cornuta ssp californica The beaked hazelnut is shrub which occurs from California to Alaska. This shrub provides outsized benefits for the ecosystem. As the name suggests, this is a true hazelnut and it does produce a 2-3cm edible nut. This nut is an important food source for people as well as birds and mammals such as jays, squirrels, chipmunks, turkeys, black bears, and deer. Beavers are also known to forage upon the stems. Adapted to the fire regime in California this plant will resprout after fire. Fire is known to increase the beaked hazelnut cover and abundance and has been a tool used in management by indigenous peoples. The stems produced in spring after fire are desirable for basketry. Blooming January to March this shrub produces catkins, floral structures which contain dense unisexual (male or female) flowers. The male catkins are pendulous chains hanging from branches just starting to leaf out in winter to spring. The leaves are notably soft and fuzzy and very much worth giving a little pat on a hike. Great places to see beaked hazelnut are in riparian areas in the Sierra Nevada Foothills to the high mountains. Think Grass Valley to Emigrant Gap. Photo Copyright © 2016 Keir Morse
