Founded at Northwestern University as a not-for-profit organization in 1933, the AAOS has grown into the world's largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists. The Academy serves over 39,000 members internationally. Members of the AAOS, are orthopaedists concerned with the diagnosis, care, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The orthopaedist's scope of practice includes disorders of the body's bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Fellows have completed four years of medical school and at least five years of an approved residency in orthopaedics. In addition, they must pass an oral and written examination, be certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and submit to stringent membership review processes prior to admittance. As March comes to a close, we reflect and celebrate #WomensHistoryMonth by honoring some incredible trailblazers who have paved the way for future generations of women in orthopaedics. ⭐ Dr. Ruth Jackson – The first woman to be certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and to join the AAOS (1937), and namesake of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS). ⭐Dr. Marian Sloane – The first woman to publish (5) scholarly articles in orthopaedic surgery (1937), the first licensed female orthopaedic surgeon in the state of New York, and the first Jewish female orthopaedic surgeon in the United States. ⭐Dr. Jacquelin Perry – One of the first women to be certified by the ABOS (1955), a revolutionary in the treatment of polio, founder of what is now known as the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, and namesake of The Perry Initiative. ⭐Dr. Mary Sherman – The first woman to be elected to The American Orthopaedic Association (1954), the first female ABOS oral examiner, and internationally known for her treatment of and research on bone cancer. ⭐Dr. Liebe Diamond – The first female orthopaedic resident and fourteenth woman to be certified by the ABOS (1957), the first president of RJOS (1983) and co-founder of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) (1971). ⭐Dr. Kristy Weber – First female president of AAOS (2019), and past president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and RJOS.
