I was very surprised at how 'deep' this book went when looking at the 'signs' that were pointed to the mass exterminations carried out by the Nazis: by going back to 1929 you can see (more clearly) what lead to this horrific chapter in history. ...more

Rose tries to find comfort in the arms of a disabled soldier while waiting for her husband to return; Ruth is a young Jewish woman who escaped the Nazis only to find that her accent has people distrusting her. Ruth eventually becomes a female wrestler and is presented as the object of hate for the audience; a caricature of the very evil she had to escape. Haunting and thought provoking. ...more

All the leaflets pretty much had the same message: why are you dying in Europe while you girlfriend/wife is waiting for you to come back home? How long will she wait for you? Did you know that Jewish arms dealers are 'dating' you girlfriend back home as you fight in a war that you will not benefit from? Don't you miss going to the movies and eating out with your girlfriend? Will your girlfriend/wife still love you if you come back home maimed? Of particular interest is a Passierschien (safe conduct pass) that an Allied soldier could fill out and turn over to Wehrmacht officers to surrender: excellent way to identify who would be willing to divulge information if captured - if found on an Allied soldier I suspect there would be a heavy price to pay! ...more

Wanting freedom for India he allied himself with the Axis powers; but only after trying to work with Gandhi to try to get the British to understand that the situation in India could not continue. Amazing to me that America could not see this struggle as so very similar to our own; we should have seen the reflection of our own struggle with colonialism mirrored in what was happening in India. ...more

Was extremely disappointed with this book; the focus on every imaginable sexual 'act' seemed to me to distract from what the book was supposed to address: what made Hitler Hitler. There is a long (and graphic) description of the sexual interactions of Alois Hitler, Jr. that serves no purpose whatsoever. The particulars of the sexual fantasies of Adolf Hitler are very creative - but have no historical evidence. This is a long and winding book that I found uninteresting and overindulgently banal in the light of true evil....more

A series that deserves a much wider readership - check it out! ...more

This memoir is unique because it is told from the perspective of a young woman in her 20's - a young woman who has to learn to find meaning in the ever increasing brutality that awaits her everyday. The conditions the women in this camp had to endure is truly beyond belief; it defies any rational understanding of human behavior. ...more

It is (in my opinion) a book that transcends the category of 'comic' - it is a cultural expression of shifting attitudes before America entered WW II. Hitler is not the only Nazi leader Daredevil (DD) fights in this issue; DD also thwarts the plans of Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring. The most fascinating part of this issue is an 'origin' of Hitler - very inaccurate on several points - but it no doubt it introduced a generation of children to the reasons we were fighting....more

Peeling the Onion is the story of how a young Günter Grass found himself adrift in Germany after WW II. This is the most detailed book I have ever read that covers what happened after Stunde Null (Zero Hour - the end of the Nazi regime in 1945 and the formation of a new Germany) when Germany had to rebuild in the shadow of occupation. The 'onion' of being has to be peeled; to get to the core of the transition of a young man to the winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is in a country adrift; no officials able to guide the people through the rubble of 'total war' that was called for. Heartbreaking and humorous - contrast this book with Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Céline - to get a view of traumatic ideation and how leaves a mark on everyone....more
