I've learned during this commission process that hexagons are the bestagons.
I really like this line of thinking and appreciate you sharing it with us. I agree with the original comment, it does have a melancholy feel (perhaps because of the lack of colors), but after reading your response I can also see the positive -- there is empowerment and determination!
For realistic anthro art, my preference is not having any tail at all. They don't make sense with the morphology of a human body, and with realistic, plantigrade, human silhouettes, they tend to weaken the overall shape.
That said, I think tails can be nice counter weights for more horizontal postures, and they can also be really great additions to more exaggerated, cartoony, or bestial designs. Ultimately, my characters don't have them for the same reason John Blacksad doesn't--it would just feel too off for me to add them.

Absolutely wonderful textures. I understand what you said in the above reply about the tail causing trouble with the clarity of the silhouette, but I think you're one of the only artists I've seen that's brave enough to roll with it! Don't let anyone get you down. This piece, and your work as a whole, is really striking, and engaging.
There was a significant chunk of the process where I thought to myself, "Why did I agree to do B/W as a completed image?!" I was excited at the beginning, and excited near the end, but everything in the middle of the process felt like incredulity. Glad to hear I stuck my landing. <3
