Projects and Subprojects

Rob Royce edited this page Apr 25, 2023 · 4 revisions

This page provides a comprehensive overview of Projects and Subprojects in the Knowledge application, detailing their role in organizing Sources and explaining the concept of Project Inheritance. We also list some common Project hierarchies for different use cases.

What are Projects and Subprojects?

Projects and Subprojects are the primary organizational structures in Knowledge, designed to help users categorize and manage their Sources effectively. Projects can be thought of as containers that hold Sources and can be further divided into Subprojects, creating a hierarchy that enables users to break down complex concepts into smaller, more manageable parts.

Subprojects are nested within their parent Projects and can have their own Subprojects, allowing users to create a multi-level hierarchy tailored to their specific needs.

Creating Projects and Subprojects

To create a Project:

  1. Open the Knowledge application.
  2. Click the "+ Project" button at the top of the window.
  3. Enter a name for your Project and click "Create."

To create a Subproject:

  1. Right-click on an existing Project in the Project Tree.
  2. Select "Add Subproject," and follow the same steps as above.

Organizing Sources with Projects and Subprojects

Projects and Subprojects are essential for keeping your Sources organized and easily accessible. By assigning Sources to Projects or Subprojects, you can group them based on common themes or ideas, making it easier to navigate and manage your information.

To assign a Source to a Project or Subproject:

  1. Go to the Inbox view, where all newly imported Sources are placed.
  2. Select the desired Source and choose the appropriate Project or Subproject from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click "Import" to assign the Source to the selected Project or Subproject.

You can also use the "Import All" option to import all Sources in the Inbox to the chosen Project or Subproject at once.

Project Inheritance

Project Inheritance is a powerful feature in Knowledge that allows higher-level Projects to inherit the Sources of all their descendant Projects and Subprojects. When a Project is active, its Sources and the Sources of all its Subprojects become visible and accessible.

This feature streamlines the organization and navigation process by enabling users to view and interact with all relevant Sources in one place, without having to go through multiple Subprojects individually.

Recommended Project Structures

Organizing your Sources into a well-structured hierarchy can greatly improve your research and learning experience. Here are some common Project structures that you can use as a starting point:

By Subject or Area of Interest

Organize your Projects based on different subjects or areas of interest. This structure works well for students, researchers, or anyone who wants to keep their information separated by discipline or topic.

Example:

- History
  - Ancient Civilizations
  - World War II
- Science
  - Biology
  - Physics

By Task or Goal

Create Projects based on specific tasks or goals that you want to achieve. This approach is suitable for professionals who need to manage various projects, tasks, or objectives.

Example:

- Marketing Strategy
  - Social Media Campaign
  - Content Creation
- Product Development
  - User Research
  - Prototyping

By Time

Organize your Projects chronologically, making it easier to track your progress and review your work over time. This structure can be helpful for writers, researchers, or anyone who wants to document their work in a time-based manner.

Example:

- 2021
  - Q1
  - Q2
- 2022
  - Q1
  - Q2

By Source Type

Sort your Projects by the type of Sources they contain, such as books, articles, videos, or websites. This structure can be useful for users who prefer to access information through specific mediums or formats.

Example:

- Books
  - Fiction
  - Non-Fiction
- Articles
  - News
  - Research Papers

These are just a few examples of how you can structure your Projects in Knowledge. Feel free to customize and expand upon these structures to fit your unique needs and preferences. By organizing your Projects effectively, you can maximize the value and potential of your Sources in the Knowledge application.

Summary

Projects and Subprojects are essential organizational structures in the Knowledge application that help users effectively categorize and manage their Sources. By creating a well-structured hierarchy of Projects and Subprojects, users can easily navigate and access their information. The concept of Project Inheritance further enhances the user experience by consolidating Sources from different levels of the hierarchy into a single, easily accessible view.
