The root cause identified was long garbage collection pauses during Major GC in the Old Generation. The application used the default Parallel Garbage Collector, which focused on throughput but caused stop-the-world events that blocked request processing.
A possible approach to address the issue could be:
• Garbage collector selection: Switch to the G1 Garbage Collector using
-XX:+UseG1GC, designed to minimize GC pause times.
• Target pause time: Set the option -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis to target a maximum garbage collection pause duration.
• Heap sizing: Adjust the initial and maximum heap settings with -Xms<Value> and -Xmx<Value> to ensure a consistent heap size and avoid the overhead associated with resizing.
• Region size: In the G1 Garbage Collector, the heap is divided into equally sized regions, each serving as a flexible unit for memory allocation and garbage collection. The size of these regions can significantly impact performance, as smaller regions improve memory allocation granularity. Still, it may increase management overhead, while larger regions reduce overhead but can lead to less efficient memory use. We can configure the region size using the JVM parameter -XX:G1HeapRegionSize=<value>. Choosing the optimal region size depends on the application’s memory footprint and behavior.
With the latency challenges of high-traffic web applications addressed, let’s turn to a different context: optimizing performance for a data-intensive analytics platform.
Scaling a data-intensive analytics platform (Case Study 2)
A big data analytics platform faced severe performance bottlenecks while processing massive datasets. The application frequently ran out of memory and experienced long garbage collection pauses, disrupting workflows and delaying critical analytics tasks.

• Garbage collector selection: Adopt the Z Garbage Collector (ZGC) for its low-pause characteristics and scalability.
• Heap scaling: Set heap size dynamically using -XX:InitialRAMPercentage=<value> and
-XX:MaxRAMPercentage=<value> to allocate memory based on available system resources.
• GC logging: Enable detailed GC logs with -Xlog:gc* for real-time monitoring and fine-tuning.
• Max pause time: Configure minimal pause durations using
-XX:MaxGCPauseMillis.
After scaling a data-intensive platform, let’s explore how JVM tuning can address memory constraints in containerized microservices architectures.
Optimizing memory usage in a microservices architecture (Case Study 3)
A microservices-based payment processing system deployed in a Kubernetes cluster frequently exceeded container memory limits, leading to pod restarts and service disruptions. This issue impacted the reliability of payment processing during peak transaction loads.

A possible approach to address the issue could be:

• Heap size management: Configure heap sizes as percentages of container memory using -XX:InitialRAMPercentage=<value> and
-XX:MaxRAMPercentage=<value>.
• Metaspace tuning: Prevent uncontrolled growth by setting -XX:MetaspaceSize=<value> and -XX:MaxMetaspaceSize=<value>.
