Have you heard about the #30by30 target? 🎯 Australian governments are working together to achieve a national target to protect and conserve 30% of Australia’s land and 30% of marine areas by 2030. To do this, we’ve released the National Roadmap for protecting and conserving 30% of Australia’s land by 2030. Over 22% of Australia’s land, including inland waters, is protected. We need to protect an additional 60 million hectares of land to meet this target. The roadmap will help coordinate national efforts towards the 30 by 30 land target. It complements: 🌱 Australia’s Strategy for the National Reserve System 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21wNJoF 📍 Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) Framework 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21wNJoH 🤝 relevant state and territory policies. The roadmap aims to protect our native species, ecosystems, cultural values and unique landscapes for future generations. Learn more 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21wNJoG

Wetlands Matter! Im happy to live and work in states that have state level protections and regulations over wetlands. Two excerpts that stood out to me include: “According to the EPA, a single acre of wetland can store 1 to 1.5 million gallons of water.” “Currently, 25 states nationwide have protections beyond federal requirements, and 25 do not. Colorado just passed legislation to expand state protections to cover what was lost in the Sackett decision, and Illinois is considering similar legislation. However, other states are examining rolling back existing state-level protections. …” Check out this article for more insights.
Wetlands are some of the planet's most important ecosystems, providing everything from natural flood mitigation to carbon sequestration. Now, following the Supreme Court's decision to limit federal legal protection of wetlands, states around the country are considering whether to step up vital protections for these landscapes. TNC Global Board Chair Bill Frist, M.D. explains why wetlands conservation benefits us all. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eH-KXEX6 📷 Chris Helzer

Mangroves currently in protected areas, however, the urgency to halt all loss is fundamental. One of our key approaches is incorporating of mangroves into permanent forms of protection including traditional protected areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), which could encompass indigenous lands and areas of sustainable use. https://lnkd.in/dk7cKrCU
