6 useful personal behaviors I’ve instilled during my Woodson Equity internship thus far. 1. Arrive before everyone else; using that quiet time to get settled and focused. Being ready to go as my colleagues arrive sets a productive tone for my day. 2. Breaking my day into hour-long segments. Tracking my activities this way helps me maximize tasks and maintain productivity throughout the day. 3. Use Excel to log my tasks and progress, ensuring everything is organized and easy to follow. Regularly give situational reports my current status on taskers. The work I input into software is almost anonymous, helping my team stay aligned on ongoing projects and responsibilities. 4. Further my connections both in and outside the office. For instance, during my summer I was selected for jury duty in the Northern District Court of Illinois, I met amazing individuals, some whose paths have since crossed with mine during my daily commute. Our mutual commonality in being veterans and working in finance truly demonstrates the power of maintaining connections in unexpected places. 5. Take detailed notes during meetings, tracking key conversations, and sharing those thoughts with my leadership. Asking questions will uncover valuable insights and develop a deeper internship experience. 6. When communicating electronically, always aim for clarity, conciseness, and professionalism. Avoid poor habits like using overly casual language, or unclear phrasing. Review emails and messages to ensure they reflect my best self and convey my thoughts effectively. *INTERN VIDEO CHALLENGE – Video 1* Like many of you, we have interns working with us at Roberts & Ryan this summer.  It’s important to us that it’s a mutually beneficial relationship – we get some work out of them and they learn in the process! ✅ We do our best to give them as much exposure to different parts of the business as possible.  They work with our fixed income and equity teams, help with our corporate access efforts, and spend time on the NYSE trading floor. ✅ We thought it would be fun to have them break into teams and make videos about the firm.  The idea being that it will be a catalyst for them to take a deeper look at the firm as a whole.  We have a couple of groups coming through, so I’m going to put the videos out as I get them. ✅ This first video was done by Quamique Marcial (“Q”) and Louis Davis, 2 college students that came to us from the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, and Conrad Luce. It was interesting to me – and made me happy – to see their take on Roberts & Ryan. This video was done entirely by the interns, and this first group was a little pressed for time.  Can’t wait to see what the other teams put together! This month we said goodbye and good luck to our summer intern, Riley. Before heading back to complete his studies at Stephen F. Austin University, he gave an excellent presentation to our team based on his summer project, "Top 5 Hazards and Risks in Tree Care Storm Work." Here's what Riley had to say about his internship experience: What was the most important thing you learned on the job? "The importance of continuous education. So many things always come out and there is always something to learn." If you were interviewed by next year's intern what advice/recommendations would you give them before they start? "Ask questions, write things down to ask Andrew in the morning, and you won't have a boring car ride. Eat well and take care of yourself. Be curious. Seek understanding." We just wrapped up another great internship with the addition of Luke Brassard to our team this summer. Luke, a graduate of St Sebastian school, is getting ready to start his sophomore year at Holy Cross. The way Luke came across our company is pretty interesting. He originally applied for an internship at the Needham Town Departments, but unfortunately, they didn't have any openings. However, someone from the town suggested him to me, sharing his resume and saying he might be a good fit. The rest is history, as they say. During the three months of the internship, what can we expect from interns? What can we teach them? I think there's a great opportunity to pass on some important lessons. In the end, it's up to the interns themselves to analyze, soak up, and put these teachings into practice. For me personally, I prioritize the following things: 1. Accountability - getting tasks done quickly and efficiently. 2. Resourcefulness - figuring out creative solutions. 3. Planning - like I always say, "proper planning prevents poor performance." 4. Relentlessness - the determination to finish tasks, no matter what obstacles come up. Luke has consistently shown these qualities since day one, earning the respect of our whole team in no time. A message from Genesis Cubillas at The City of Tucson Mayors Office: As we head into the holiday weekend to gather and celebrate with loved ones, I am taking a moment to reflect on things I am grateful for this year. One thing that stands out to me is the work of our Interns at Mayor Romero’s office through a partnership between San Miguel High School’s Corporate Work Study Program and the Pima County Summer Youth Employment Program. Our interns—Itzel, Briana, Melany, and Alejandro—remind me of the potential that exists in all young people. They are the next generation of leaders shaping a brighter future for us all. I am thankful for internship programs that are helping us build bridges to opportunity, especially for Tucson’s youth. Youth workforce development programs provide young people with invaluable real-life job training, allowing them to learn critical skills they can use in their future careers. Through these programs, we’re investing in their personal growth and strengthening the foundation of our community by preparing our next generation of leaders. Pima County and the City of Tucson collaborated to pass the Prosperity Initiative, which prioritizes expanding youth workforce development opportunities as part of its policy recommendations. As part of this effort, the City of Tucson provided funding to Pima County to create at least 100 summer internships each year within City Departments, including the Mayor and Council Offices. Internship opportunities like these help young people earn income during summer break, in turn, helping families. This is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we work together to invest in our future. I especially love that our office interns keep me young and up to date with the TikTok lingo, all while challenging policy and bringing fresh perspectives to our office. While they learn from us, they are also teaching us to stay connected to what matters most to the next generation. It has been a privilege to see each one of them grow!
