I had a call with a Finance Director a few weeks ago about a vacancy... She was at BREAKING POINT... (Shared with permission) Naturally, I asked, Why? 👇 She’d had a NIGHTMARE hiring for a Finance Manager directly... After THREE rounds of interviews and THREE offers—all rejected. She's was back to Square One! But then, things got even worse... With no Finance Manager (who'd finished 2 weeks prior), the pressure had been on the team to deliver on projects, and morale had taken a huge hit. ....the Management Accountant RESIGNED! The initial motive for hiring directly was to avoid paying agency fees. Instead... 💷 HUGE amounts of time wasted 💷 Projects delayed 💷 Now, two vacancies instead of one (Two Fees) Fast forward to now.... We've just successfully filled both vacancies in under 2 weeks... Safe to say... We've got a happy client and two happy candidates. So....Here’s my view.... If you're hiring directly, that’s cool. But don’t rule out working with a specialist agency at the same time... It could end up costing you even more if your Plan A fails. Front Office in finance - YOUR DREAM!! Sadly, you probably won't land it. But did you know there are back office jobs that are an excellent way to start your career? Let's review... Front Office: Revenue generating / faces clients Why You Won't Get: Firms are extremely protective of these roles since they ARE the reputation and relationships of the firm. The roles typically do not sponsor. Pay: Amazing Middle Office: Analytics / Risk Why You Might Not Get: There roles are challenging. Most analysts in these roles are very good at math or graduated from top programs. Pay: Good Back Office: IT Why You Might Get: There roles are much less competitive due to their "unrelated-to-finance" nature and lower pay and respect. Pay: Low Now the good news: There are some back office roles that DIRECTLY support the front office (skipping the middle-man). Trade support, operations in deal settlement, etc. For some ridiculous reason, most job seekers in finance don't pay attention to these roles! But doing a good job in these roles is an excellent way to prove yourself as a competent analyst (plus you'll build a pretty relevant skillset). It's an awesome way to break-in to front office!
