You can now add #fusion energy technology to the growing list of power sources transforming the energy industry in its quest to supply enough electricity to power artificial intelligence. In this report from CNBC, Commonwealth Fusion Systems will build a power plant, sometime in the mid-2030’s near Richmond, Virginia with a peak capacity of approximately 400 megawatts. While the promise of commercializing fusion technology has been around for as long as I can remember, having lived not far from Princeton University’s #Tokamak reactor project, it’s the attention and investments that this and other energy innovations, such as small modular nuclear reactors (#SMRs) are receiving that are generating excitement. If it is all due to #AI and the need for new data center development to house and cool GPUs from the likes of NVIDIA or AMD, and others, then we are witnessing an energy transformation that will impact everything from the transition to #eVs to home electrification.

Glad to join the Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP’s Commission on the Scaling of Fusion Energy. My goal is to position the United States at the forefront of the fusion energy race, and we’ll need a strong U.S. government position to do so. Fusion is a key to the global energy transition. The U.S. has made progress convening industry, academia, and government to build the most dynamic fusion ecosystem. The signing of the ADVANCE Act this month is just one example of firmly establishing fusion commercialization as a goal. However, things are changing quickly and the U.S. risks falling behind if it doesn't better align all of these stakeholders. I anticipate that the Commission will spur a vibrant conversation among fusion leaders at private companies like myself, policymakers, and academics. All are perspectives we need to level up the U.S. fusion program and create a fusion industry that works for everyone. Fusion Power is coming and the USA should go all in on it. Within a decade or so we should be able to begin scaling Fusion Enegry to start powering much of our electric grid and we should make a proactive decision to lead the world in this industry and this tech.
