On behalf of the US Navy, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Royal Australian Navy for locating the final resting place of the destroyer USS Edsall (DD 219), lost in a valiant battle against the Imperial Japanese Navy in the early days of World War II. The commanding officer of Edsall lived up to the U.S. Navy tenet, “Don’t give up the ship,” even when faced with overwhelming odds. The wreck of this ship is a hallowed site, serving as a marker for the 185 U.S. Navy personnel and 31 U.S. Army Air Force pilots aboard at the time, almost all of whom were lost when Edsall succumbed to her battle damage. This find gives us the opportunity for today’s generation of Sailors and Navy civilians to be inspired by their valor and sacrifice. The U.S. Navy would also like to take this opportunity to salute the valor of the crew of the Australian sloop HMAS Yarra, lost two days after the Edsall, under similar circumstances in a heroic battle against overwhelming odds. Finding the Edsall further cements the strong alliance that has existed between the United States and Australia since World War II, the relationship between the Royal Australian Navy and the U.S. Navy, further reinforced by the current Australia, United Kingdom, United States (AUKUS) trilateral security partnership. A key component of AUKUS is the development of the most cutting-edge underwater technologies of the type that enabled the discovery of Edsall in the vastness of the Indian Ocean, something not possible just a few years ago. These advanced technologies, enabled by interoperability between long-standing Indo-Pacific Allies and partners, ensure our collective capability to preserve the peace, respond in crisis, and win decisively in war, if called.

So proud of my classmate, company mate, and friend RADM Jim Waters for the impact he is making on the fleet and our nation as he leads U. S. Navy recruiting. I have been recruiting for nearly thirty years and observed three effective recruiting concepts in this post that I wanted to share with you to help you recruit talent. Feel free to share what you or your organization have done that aligns with these concepts in the comments section. 1) Recognition is a great way to tell your organization's story as you recruit talent. How can you follow this example and, by recognizing those in your group who have achieved success and highlight those joining it, attract prospective talent? Video is such a great vehicle yet I have noticed most organizations do absolutely nothing with this potent and cost-effective tool to tell their story and attract talent. Does your organization have a YouTube channel dedicated to sharing testimonials via video? 2) Joseph Campbell, the legendary scholar on mythology, talks about how "myth" is what morivates us. The story, what Campbell calls "the myth", is what he describes as a "field of reference." The myth of the Navy and the Marine Corps is something you do not just learn about as a midshipman at Annapolis, but something you experience for four years and become a part of. It is the same thing for every sailor and marine going through boot camp. The ritualistic and challenging indoctrination becomes a rite of passage to embark on the adventure to join the myth and become part of the lore. 3) Ceremony and ritual is something that much of our society has lost yet is an important facet of the human journey and is a very attractive concept, especially to young people who have no ritual in their lives. Rituals enable us to physically manifest our commitment to the myth and help us commit more deeply to it. What rituals have become part of your organization's story? How can you follow this example and create traditions and rituals that bring your team together and become part of your lore? Prioritizing the Culture of Service, What Lessons can be Taught from Military Service at Navy League of the United States’ #SeaAirSpace 2024 Sailor life offers unrivaled opportunities for young Americans seeking purpose and adventure, but such personal fulfillment is only possible amidst a service-wide culture of respect, duty, professionalism, and service to others. This extends beyond those in uniform, to include strong support for spouses and children. It also extends beyond the length of one’s time in service, as each Sailor, Marine, and Sentinel is expected to maintain the integrity and strength of character developed while in uniform even after transitioning out of service. How does America develop the greatest Sailors, Marines, and Sentinels in the world and how will we continue to do so? We heard from the senior enlisted members of these renowned sea services and learned about the tireless work they undertake to ensure that the quality of our servicemembers remain the envy of the world.
