“Despite all the whizbang technology, improved trial design, and new regulations, there's one obstacle that still plagues trial participants, especially those in underserved communities. Taxes.” Many thanks to Dan Schell from Clinical Leader for shedding light on the tax burden that clinical trial participants often face, and for mentioning Mural Health's leadership in making clinical trials more accessible through the Harley Jacobsen Act. As someone deeply invested in advancing healthcare, I found this perspective on human-centered trial recruitment particularly compelling. It reminds us that behind every enrollment metric is a person facing life-changing decisions, often during one of their most vulnerable moments. What resonates most is the shift from viewing patient recruitment as a numbers game to understanding it as a trust-building journey. When we acknowledge that each potential participant brings their own unique hopes, fears, and family considerations to the table, we begin to bridge the gap between scientific advancement and human experience. The future of clinical research depends on our ability to create these meaningful connections. It's not just about explaining the science – it's about understanding the human story behind every decision to participate. #ClinicalTrials #HealthcareInnovation #PatientCentricity #ClinicalResearch #Healthcare
Only 8% of eligible patients participate in clinical trials. This gap between medical innovation and patient engagement isn't just a number – it's an opportunity to transform how we connect people with potentially life-changing research. In my latest post, I explore how clinical trial recruitment is evolving to put human experience first. After all, behind every potential participant is someone making profound decisions about their health journey. Let Us Discuss Fairness for Participants in Clinical Trials Did you know that people who take part in clinical trials and get paid for their time and labor are often subject to taxes on that money? This places an unfair financial strain on those who are already making contributions to the fields of medicine and science. Participants in clinical trials are partners in innovation rather than just subjects. They are essential in the development of life-saving therapies and the advancement of our understanding of uncommon diseases. However, their priceless contributions are not reflected in the existing tax law. It's time to push for reform. We can reward those who enable clinical trials, promote more diverse participation, and enhance healthcare for all by reducing the tax burden on clinical trial participants. #clinicaltrials #taxreferendum #healthcare

🚨 Let’s talk about the real-world obstacles to clinical trial participation that often go unnoticed but are in desperate need of our attention. Did you know that participants who give their time, energy, and sometimes their well-being to advance promising science often get taxed on their compensation. That’s right—Uncle Sam treats it like regular income.🙄 This places an unfair burden on the very people who are essential partners in innovation. Patients shouldn’t be penalized for helping develop life-saving therapies and advancing medicine. 👉 Check out Dan Schell’s smart take on this issue to learn more: https://lnkd.in/efRkFk9s. No matter how brilliant your patient engagement framework or recruitment campaign looks on paper, ignoring issues like these means you’re building on a shaky foundation. Biopharma companies with groundbreaking science can’t afford to overlook the hidden burdens patients face—especially in today’s fiercely competitive environment. Addressing these challenges head-on and actively working to resolve them is what turns theoretical patient engagement strategies into practical, effective solutions. Let’s prioritize the patient experience by fixing the basics so more patients can say “yes” to research. This isn’t just about fairness; it’s how we make clinical trials more inclusive, impactful, accessible, and feasible. Wanna talk about the barriers your patients face in the real world? Movie Title: Understanding Clinical Trials in Health & Wellness Movie Synopsis: Clinical trials play a crucial role in advancing medical research and improving health outcomes for individuals around the world. In this ebook, we will explore the importance of clinical trials in the field of health and wellness, and how they contribute to the development of new treatments and therapies. We will also discuss the different phases of clinical trials, the benefits and risks involved, and how individuals can participate in these trials. Scene 1: What are Clinical Trials? Clinical trials are research studies that test the safety and effectiveness of new treatments, medications, or interventions on human subjects. These trials are conducted to determine whether a new treatment is safe, effective, and better than existing treatments. Clinical trials are essential for advancing medical research and improving patient care. Scene 2: The Phases of Clinical Trials Clinical trials are conducted in four phases, each with a specific purpose and goal. In Phase 1, the focus is on testing the safety of the treatment on a small group of healthy volunteers. In Phase 2, the treatment is tested on a larger group of patients to determine its effectiveness and optimal dosage. Phase 3 involves testing the treatment on a larger group of patients to confirm its effectiveness and monitor any side effects. Finally, in Phase 4, the treatment is monitored after it has been approved for use by regulatory authorities. Scene 3: Benefits and Risks of Clinical Trials Participating in a clinical trial can have several benefits, including access to cutting-edge treatments, expert medical care, and the opportunity to contribute to medical research. However, there are also risks involved, such as potential side effects, inconvenience, and the possibility of receiving a placebo instead of the actual treatment. It is important for individuals to weigh the benefits and risks before deciding to participate in a clinical trial. Scene 4: How to Participate in Clinical Trials Individuals who are interested in participating in a clinical trial can search for ongoing trials on websites such as www.clinicaltrials.gov or contact research institutions and healthcare providers for more information. Before enrolling in a clinical trial, individuals should carefully review the informed consent form, ask questions, and discuss the risks and benefits with their healthcare provider. Conclusion: Clinical trials are essential for advancing medical research and improving health outcomes for individuals. By understanding the importance of clinical trials, the different phases involved, and how to participate, individuals can make informed decisions about their healthcare and contribute to the development of new treatments and therapies.

Clinical trials are the lifeblood of medical innovation, but their success hinges on one critical factor: patients. Yet, as the article by Emily Epstein, LMSW, highlights, the decision to enroll in a trial isn’t merely clinical—it’s personal, shaped by trust, accessibility, and understanding. For patients, the journey to trial participation begins with a question: “Will this help me—or someone like me?” Emily is a unique voice in addressing this pressing, humanistic topic. #patientexperience #clinicaltrials #accesstocare

"Clinical trials come with benefits, risks, and costs that influence a patient’s decision to participate and affect their conduct during and after the trial. Financial, in addition to logistical, burdens have been shown to affect recruitment, access to study sites, and completion rate" But how do you measure this burden? That's what this free-to-access calculator is seeking to do. I had the pleasure of seeing it in action during a DIA webinar yesterday and it's simple, clear and could have benefits not just in helping to determine potential compensation for trial participants but it could also help in trial design by identifying where the highest pain points lie for patient burden, which would allow for possible adjustments to be made. I'd highly recommend checking out this article by Larry Ajuwon , as well as the calculator itself! https://lnkd.in/e-YPAcXA
