Now we have entered the spooky season, we are all getting ready for the night excited children knock on our doors shouting 'Trick or Treat!" Have you ever thought about how this tradition began? The origins of this tradition dates back centuries, with roots in as far back as Celtic festivals such as Samhain, where people would dress us to ward off spirits. During the medieval period, 'souling' became popular. This is where the poor would go door to door offering prayers in exchange for food or 'soul cakes'. This evolved into what we now call trick-or-treating! So how does this connect to food? Food has always been central to the Halloween experience, just look at how many of us hand out sweets. It represents generosity, develops a sense of community, and is topped off with a playful exchange. Sharing food is at the heart of this tradition, no matter what types of treats you hand out after you hear a knock on your door.
