The World Conference on Research Integrity really is my favorite conference to date. Here are my key takeaways and insights from #WCRI2024: 1. Research integrity leads to research quality, and quality of data and methods leads to research integrity. 2. Research integrity is made possible by institutional academic integrity. 3. Reproducibility is the key characteristic of science, and of research integrity; this is more important than ever as we enter the era of AI. 4. Research integrity practices are also about fairness in collaborations and equitable partnerships. 5. We must always ensure Researcher Wellbeing! 6. Quality vs Quantity: Am reminded and reassured that research quality is not about quantity or volume of publications or citations; it is good to do deeper, more long term research. Reflecting deeply on operationalizing my insights from WCRI, I now keep on emphasizing these two words to my team all the time. It is also R & I. Reproducibility and Interpretability. Our responsibility at 101 Health Research in the larger scientific research and public health ecosystem is ensuring data integrity by designing processes and documentation that ensure both reproducibility and interpretability. And myself as Founder, I want to preserve the integrity of the evenings and weekends of my employees so they can have enough brain power as they bring out their best work on Mondays to Fridays. Let's conduct a simple test to see if I am wrong. Several ICMA members have told me something that I think is incredibly naive. They believe they can change the organization from within. But how can you change the ICMA - International City/County Management Association from within when the entire process of electing members to the executive board is rigged? Every candidate is handpicked by the establishment and they get to run unopposed! OK -- let's put that aside for a moment and work on something smaller and much easier to accomplish. Let's talk about the ICMA's selection of host cities for their annual conference. Here is the list: https://lnkd.in/djDrgSiZ As the president of the American Association of Municipal Executives, I am officially declaring that all future conferences will be held in cities with a council-manager form of government. If you are a member of the ICMA and think the organization that supposedly exists to promote the council-manager form of government should host their events in cities that actually have city managers -- demand change. Prove me wrong! Demand that Marc Ott and the ICMA executive board only hold events in council-manager cities after the 2024 annual conference. If you can't change something this easy and reasonable -- how do you expect to change anything else? ----- No organization exists to defend and advocate for the city or county manager as a professional.
