Quibim, a Valencia, Spain-based healthtech company for precision medicine, raised $50M in funding. The round was led by Asabys Partners (through its fund Sabadell Asabys II) and Buenavista Equity Partners (formerly GED Capital) Equity Partners (through the BHG I fund, created in partnership with Columbus Venture Partners), and joined by UI Investissements, and GoHub Ventures as new investors. #News: In an attempt to continue its I&I dominance beyond #Humira, #Skyrizi and #Rinvoq, AbbVie is buying up another small #autoimmune startup. The Chicago-area pharma giant is dishing out $200 million upfront in cash to snag Nimble Therapeutics and its #preclinicalpipeline of #oralpeptidecandidates. Nimble spun out of Roche in 2019. The pharma bought early-stage I&I biotech #Celsius for $250 million in cash over the summer and #IBD #drugdeveloper #Landos for $137.5 million upfront in the spring. Outside of I&I, it also acquired #neuro #startup Aliada Therapeutics this fall for $1.4 billion. Madison, WI, and Philadelphia-based Nimble has a pipeline of experimental oral medicines for #psoriasis and “several autoimmune diseases” that #AbbVie didn’t disclose. AbbVie highlighted an IL23R inhibitor in its press release, but Nimble’s website also shows an oral C5 inhibitor for generalized myasthenia gravis and an oral TL1A inhibitor for IBD. One of the biotech industry's star investors, the 38-year-old VC firm ARCH Venture Partners, uncorked its 13th fund on Thursday. The Chicago-based firm has another $3 billion to deploy into its large bets on neuroscience, AI, obesity, autoimmune diseases and other areas ripe for more precise treatments. “We’re trying to slow down, but not slowing down because there’s so much cool stuff right now,” managing director Bob Nelsen said Wednesday in an interview with Endpoints News. “Every time we think we’re going to slow down, AI happens or some other thing happens, so it’s an amazing environment to start companies, small ones or big ones, and we do both.” The firm has dished out larger checks and created more startups than most other biotech VC investors over the years. Its current roster includes Xaira Therapeutics, Mirador Therapeutics, Seaport Therapeutics and Metsera among dozens of others. “I’m very hopeful over the next 10 years, and certainly the life of Fund XIII, that we’ll continue to evolve the precision medicine models so that we can better serve patients with lupus, with rheumatoid arthritis, with metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease,” managing director Kristina Burow said in an interview. “Those aren’t just giant, lump diseases. AbbVie is doubling down on its strategy to maintain leadership in immunology and inflammation (I&I) with the nimble acquisition of Nimble Therapeutics for $200 million upfront. This move brings Nimble’s preclinical pipeline of oral peptide candidates into AbbVie’s growing I&I portfolio, as the company continues to invest in next-generation therapies beyond its blockbusters Humira, Skyrizi, and Rinvoq. Founded in 2019 as a spinout from Roche, Nimble has developed a chemical synthesis platform that supports its experimental oral treatments, including IL-23R inhibitor for psoriasis, C5 inhibitor for generalized myasthenia gravis, and TL1A inhibitor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This deal marks AbbVie’s third autoimmune-focused acquisition this year, following Celsius Therapeutics ($250M) and Landos Biopharma ($137.5M). It also reflects a broader industry trend of large pharmas acquiring smaller, private biotechs with early-stage assets. The focus on oral therapies highlights an important shift in the autoimmune space, as patients and providers increasingly seek alternatives to injectable biologics.
