Great to see CEA organisations working together as an industry to create these sustainability frameworks and also a reminder for those of us who supply them. As a substrate creator, I am very aware of the need for waste minimisation and biodegradability. Now, in America, they have created a standard framework so everyone is looking at the same data points. That includes: ● How much can we reduce what goes to landfill with circular options (recycling, biodegrading, composting, fertiliser mix)? ● How environmentally friendly are our inputs AND their packaging? This means they will be looking at peat being a carbon store and finding alternate options or sustainable peat sources. They will look at the carbon emissions of our substrates and compare them. It's a challenge but I feel lucky to be a startup coming in knowing this from the start, and not a larger company trying to change. Although I do think we could collaborate too. They will consider the plastic bags our substrate slabs come in: ● Could these be a recyclable hard plastic instead? ● If we don't have to soak for 24 hours, could it be paper? ● Can we paint the blocks with bio based paint like the wool pigment created here in NZ? Several of these suggestions were made to me at recent conferences and I think its time we start to discuss them. Or maybe I'm new and simply haven't heard yet - so I am open to feedback and ideas! #cea #sustainability #growingmedia
