José G. Miranda, Supervising Attorney in IRAP's Climate Department, wrote a blog post highlighting the key gains from the Chile Declaration and Plan of Action, particularly as they relate to climate displacement. The blog also explores what actions practitioners and participants in climate and migrant justice movements should take to hold the U.S. government accountable for its fair share of climate injustice. New on RESEARCHING INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT: "Climate Change, the Displacement of Puerto Ricans and the Problem of Representation" - by Marielys Padua Soto - https://lnkd.in/eJktZngb This paper highlights the particular challenges of Puerto Ricans facing displacement in the context of climate change. Unlike Small Island Developing States and other climate-vulnerable nations, the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is not well-positioned to benefit from UNFCCC initiatives to build resilience and address climate-related challenges due its status as an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is therefore imperative that Puerto Rican authorities and civil society, the US government and international organizations collaborate to develop measures and mechanisms to safeguard the rights of Puerto Ricans displaced on the island of Puerto Rico and to the US mainland. #displacement #idps #disaster #climatechange #migration #puertorico Researching Internal Displacement Refugee Law Initiative Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies, School of Advanced Study Marielys Padua Soto Steven Miron

Very honored to have my piece published by Researching Internal Displacement. Many thanks to Steven Miron for his invaluable support. Here are some highlights: - Puerto Rico faces significant climate vulnerabilities similar to those of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including extreme weather events and sea level rise. -Climate-induced events such as Hurricane Maria have caused the displacement of Puerto Ricans, particularly younger people, to the continental United States. -Puerto Rico's political status limits its access to international support and frameworks for climate adaptation and mitigation. -Demographic impacts include an aging population, a shrinking workforce and economic challenges. #internaldisplacement #puertorico #climatechange

As temperatures soar and extreme weather affects us all, the issue of climate displacement moves front and center. AILA shares why, despite a federal court setback, advocates must continue to “build the legal protections necessary to protect people displaced by climate change.”READ more on the #ThinkImmigration blog from AILA: https://bit.ly/4fTASq0

Climate Refugees are the most vulnerable people for Climate catastrophic. Unfortunately, there's least to no attention given to them either by campaigners, advocates, world leaders and nations. Sadly, there's no legally binding interventions in the international law that identify, lack of representation and rights for the climate refugees. Therefore, I call for a unified world approach in handling the rising crisis of Climate -Induced people around the world. Further, consider, climate refugees as human rights condition.

🌍 Climate Refugees and Human Security: An Urgent Challenge 🌊 As climate change forces millions to flee their homes, the link between displacement and human security becomes undeniable. From #food and #waterscarcity to #economicinstability and #socialtensions, the human cost of this crisis is staggering. Yet, climate refugees remain unprotected under international law, trapped in a policy void. Addressing this issue requires urgent global action: legal recognition, sustainable adaptation strategies, and stronger international cooperation. Human security depends on how we respond today. There is no consensus, for example, on what status climate-displaced people should receive, what rights and benefits they are entitled to, and how states should respond if climate change has rendered their homes uninhabitable. And unless policymakers proactively manage climate displacement, these movements can further weaken already fragile migration management and asylum systems. The #ClimateCrisis is also a #HumanRights crisis. How can we, as a society, better protect those most vulnerable to climate displacement through legal frameworks? This webinar offers a unique opportunity to learn from experts across the Americas and explore ways to strengthen protections for those at risk. At #CEJIL, we believe this emergency deeply impacts those forced to leave their homes due to climate-related disasters. As #ClimateChange intensifies, the urgency for legal protections for climate-displaced populations grows even stronger. Don’t miss out—register today! 👉 https://bit.ly/3UPsajz
To adapt to a changing climate, increasing numbers of people will be on the move. Although current legal frameworks have significant gaps, initiatives across the Americas have sought to protect people displaced due to climate-related environmental disasters. This conversation will bring together experts from Central America, Colombia, and the United States to analyze legal responses to climate displacement in the Americas. It will explore how the law can protect people forced to leave their homes due to climate-related phenomena, such as rising sea levels, droughts, and natural disasters, as well as the situation of populations that cannot or prefer not to migrate. The webinar will be held in both English and Spanish. My latest for Foreign Policy ⬇️ Today, people are not only fleeing repressive regimes and religious persecution, but also more frequent and extreme weather events. While more vulnerable countries such as Fiji recognize the need to address climate migration, most internal—and all international—climate migrants lack specific legal protections. https://lnkd.in/ebJihygz
