AusBiotech 2024 promotes innovation, collaboration, commercialisation and equalisation.    Reflecting on the themes of last week's events in Melbourne, we were inspired by the economic and social impact Australia's life sciences sector is having, and by the increasing role of new technologies in addressing healthcare inequities.    We valued the opportunity to network with industry peers, explore new projects, and strengthen existing ones, setting the stage for an exciting 2025.    Throughout the week we attended and sponsored several engaging events. We thank:    • Invest Victoria and Global Victoria for their networking luncheon to welcome AmCham Australia, and their Victorian Networking Reception for health, biotech and life sciences professionals, at which welcome addresses were delivered by The Hon. Tim Pallas and Dr Amanda Caples.    • MTPConnect, Nucleus Network and Global R&D Pty Ltd for partnering with us to present ‘The Australian Advantage’ to the visiting delegation from Korea, Japan and Taiwan.    • AusBiotech CEO, Rebekah Cassidy, and Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care, The Hon. Mark Butler MP, for their keynote addresses on the opening day of the conference.     • AusBiotech and BioMelbourne Network for both their networking event and the establishment of their new MOU which will strengthen collaboration between the two organisations and benefit our industry.    • AusBiotech for recognising the life and achievements of Dr Iris Depaz from Sanofi, both through The Depaz Oration and the establishment of the Iris Depaz Award, following her sad passing.    • Life Sciences Queensland Ltd (LSQ), in particular Natalie Davis and Sally Dillon, for their networking evening. I was delighted to be part of the ShareMed Swiss delegation along with colleagues Janos Karovits and Tamas Jan. ♻️ ShareMed Swiss🇨🇭 are driving the circular economy - tackling #inequalities due to #medicinesshortages with a focus on preventing surplus medicines being wasted, redistributing to areas of need and #sustainability. A great evening attending the Jumar Bioincubator (Camille Shanahan) x What The Health (Emily Casey) event hearing about the CSL success story and what it might take for it to happen again in Australia. The graph is hard to see here, but shows absolutely aspirational growth across 100+ years, driven in part by a number of strategic acquisitions (and divestments). Many insights from speaker Andrea Douglas from CSL - but a few emphasis points were: 🔎🤔remember the core tech focus 👥 attract & harness people/partners with the skills to help you succeed 🌏 succeed globally, to succeed in Australia 🌐 expand into adjacent techs that complement your capabilities 📣 use your voice to advocate for changes that will benefit the industry as a whole, including yourself 📈 take calculated risks, and my personal favourite... 🙌 develop expertise and complex tech that is hard for competitors to replicate
