When we first led their pre-seed round at Northflank, Will Stewart and Frederik Brix were engineers who loved gaming and shared insights from deploying gaming servers. One defining question they asked: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙭 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧-𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩? Today, Northflank is announcing not only their latest $22M financing round, but their general availability of their PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) offering to not only the tens of thousands of developers and startups using Northflank, but also their BYOC (Bring-your-own-Cloud) product to larger enterprises. Enterprises may have robust engineering teams but still find too much complexity in managing deployments. Many of their customer names can't be disclosed, but they are some of the most important companies in the financial services, sports, ecommerce and crypto sectors. It has been wonderful to watch this small lean team ship fast and iterate their way into the Enterprise market starting from the developer hobbyist and startup community segment. Some highlights that Northflank offers today: 💻 Unified deployment platform under one single tool ⛅ Multi-Cloud flexibility (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc) 👨🍳 Developer-centric experience 🎡 Continuous integration and deployment 💸 Scalability and cost optimizations 🔐 Highest security and compliance So we are super excited at Kindred Ventures to continue backing this visionary team (+ new COO Chase Roberts) and glad to finally officially welcome new VC backers of the mission: Slater Stich from Bain Capital Ventures and Sandeep Bhadra from Vertex Ventures, and pebblebed! Also, they are hiring across the board, so if engineering, GTM (sales, customer success), and product marketing are exciting to you, please DM me or find their website at https://northflank.com.
We just raised $22m to make Kubernetes work for your developers and fix app deployment to the cloud. This new funding was led by Slater Stich at Bain Capital Ventures and Sandeep Bhadra at Vertex Ventures. Frederik Brix and I started Northflank with one mission: to make deploying complex workloads as straightforward as possible for developers. Somewhere along the way, it feels like the industry shifted focus from building great products to building the factories that make them. To bring that focus back, we've made significant product engineering investments that have laid the foundation for our growth. By centering on the needs of developers, we've introduced features like Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC), enterprise-grade capabilities, preview environments and GitOps support. Leveraging Kubernetes as an operating system and providing the right abstractions, we've empowered developers to deploy complex workloads effortlessly, be it micro-services, stateful databases or jobs across six clouds, 100 regions and 300 Availability Zones. Today, Northflank supports tens of thousands of developers in production, handling over 1.3 million container deployments every month. With this new backing, we’re gearing up to scale our platform even further to help enterprises run complex workloads around the world and support customers like Writer, Sentry, and many more. I’m incredibly grateful to our earliest supporters—Steve Jang at Kindred Ventures, Luke Byrne at pebblebed, Patrick Murphy & Alex Mackenzie at Tapestry VC—who believed in us from the beginning. And I’m excited to welcome new partners Amanda Huang & Slater at Bain, Salil Deshpande at Uncorrelated Ventures, and more, to our journey with this Series A. I'm also thrilled to announce that Chase Roberts is joining Northflank as our new COO! He’s coming to us from Vertex, who led our Seed round, and brings a wealth of operating experience from his time at Box and Segment. I used to joke with Fred about how we could convince Chase to join the team full-time—his energy and drive are contagious. When Chase saw our vision to simplify cloud infrastructure, he couldn’t stop thinking about it; having him on board in this role feels like a perfect fit. Thank you to our new angels for believing in what we're building: Scott Johnston CEO at Docker, Inc, David Cramer Co-Founder at Sentry, Oskari Saarenmaa Co-Founder at Aiven. Ian Livingstone Kris Beevers, Jerry Ting, jeff settle, Steve Manuel and more! And most importantly, a huge thank you to our customers who trust us with their most important workloads. We're just getting started!

🚀 **Interesting Read Alert!** 🚀 I came across this fascinating blog post from Gitpod and thought it was worth sharing. After six years of using Kubernetes to build their cloud development environment platform, Gitpod is making a significant shift. With 1.5 million users and thousands of development environments running daily, they've gathered valuable insights into what works best. The blog details their journey through various experiments, failures, and dead-ends with Kubernetes. From SSDs to microVMs, they've explored numerous options to find the optimal infrastructure for secure, performant, and interoperable development environments. This change isn't about questioning Kubernetes' suitability for production; it's about finding the best fit for their development environments. Just to reiterate “This is not a story of whether or not to use Kubernetes for production workloads that’s a whole separate conversation. As is the topic of how to build a comprehensive soup-to-nuts developer experience for shipping applications on Kubernetes. This is the story of how (not) to build development environments in the cloud.” Check out the full story here: Gitpod Blog https://lnkd.in/eR3uYj4A #Gitpod #Kubernetes #CloudDevelopment #DevOps #Innovation

Be Scalable with Serverless from the Very Beginning as a Marketing Strategy Building an architecture that scales from the outset is crucial when offering free trials for your services. When your infrastructure is reliable, it becomes part of your marketing strategy. Choosing the right components ensures your infrastructure can scale seamlessly as you grow. Opt for managed services or serverless solutions, and don’t reinvent the wheel. Keep in mind that relying entirely on open-source software has hidden costs, such as the time required for development and management, which can be more expensive than outsourcing when your utilisation is low. Avoid Kubernetes if you don’t have the resources to manage it. Consider using containerised Lambda along with AWS HTTP api or RestAPI for the micro services (Backend). For the Frontend, if you’re using Next.js or React, use Amplify which offers preview environments out of the box, (Combination of CloudFront and Lambda@Edge for server side rendering) or VERCEL. Steer clear of homemade, anti-pattern solutions when better alternatives exist. Below is a proposed #Startup IT architecture featuring an opinionated #Serverless stack, where all chosen components have their community or #OpenSource versions. While this is my personal suggestion, it’s not the only way, and I respect all other options and ideas out there. Always weigh alternatives based on your unique requirements and budget. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Compare options and choose what works best for your needs. As a final note, stay focused on your product. Avoid being too procedural or overly Agile, and don’t act like you’re "too big for your britches." Respect your team’s expertise, listen to their ideas, and negotiate with humility. Always remind yourself, "The more I know, the more I realise I don’t know." Be humble and friendly. Don’t criticise people publicly; keep those discussions private. Your team’s happiness and motivation are key to your success. Minimise unnecessary meetings, especially for developers, and adopt a remote-first approach. Always appreciate others and do so in meetings. Celebrate small wins with your team. You’re the captain of the ship, trusting your sailors to navigate the ocean and survive. Now you’re ready to establish your startup. Find an idea, add some AI, team up with a partner, and find an angel 😇. Good luck, Captain 🤗... I believe in you and pray for your sight of land. Enjoy the journey!
