When Mass cannabis news is so major that every outlet in the state is jumping on the story, then I figure the best service Talking Joints Memo can provide - or at least one of them - is continuous context and aggregation. More on the way, including more breakdowns and explainers, but for now here's what is being reported by various outlets, plus a timeline of our coverage of the battle over the past year. https://lnkd.in/ephCYKAZ

USING DATA TO DRIVE POLICY I always am happy to see my team on stage with other industry professionals I learn from. Kristi Vaneé Kem will be on stage in DC for the National Indigenous Cannabis Industry & Policy Summit! She will be joining other cannabis industry SME Beau Whitney, Matthew Klas, Bonny Jo Peterson and Hunter Buffington. Shout out to Rob Pero and Mary Jane Oatman for creating and running the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association. I like Beau because he takes the time to look into the economics behind the hype. By using financial and non-financial data he has a good forecast of the future. Mainly the estimate of capital and people needed to build the industry as it grows. And policy is required for most cannabis business to move forward in any meaningful way. Using data driven insight to guide these policies helps everyone involved. Specifically the local communities these cannabis companies operate in. The nature of cannabis is that it is a start up industry. With many markets having no experienced operators in them. So anytime we can bring cannabsi industry SME together to help shape policy is a good thing. Dasheeda Dawson, Founding Executive Director of Cannabis NYC and Board Chair of Cannabis Regulators of Color Coalition (CRCC), will be making a keynote address at this year's summit. Register link in the comments. P.S. I enjoy nerding out on Data from my time Johnson Controls. Where DA was short hand for Data Analytics. Where the hype in #CPA firms serving true Public Companies was “data analytics” to full data sets. (was supposed to lower sample testing but it did not, IYKYK)

I’m excited to finally share an article I co-authored with Sandy Brennan, Michael B., and Jennifer Donnan, published last year. Our research addresses the ongoing challenges legacy cannabis retailers face in entering the legal market. It sheds light on the financial, legal, and social barriers hindering legacy retailers' integration into the legal ecosystem. The article also offers timely policy recommendations to lower these barriers, enhance public safety, and displace the unlicensed market. By focusing on innovative programs, market entry support for equity-deserving individuals, and the expungement of previous convictions, we provide a roadmap for sustainable growth in this evolving industry. If you're interested in policy strategies to strengthen the cannabis sector and promote more inclusive market opportunities, I invite you to explore our work here: https://lnkd.in/ej8sa7Wr #CannabisPolicy #LegacyRetailers #PublicSafety #CannabisMarket #PolicyRecommendations

Game on! Get your thoughts together and get your comments ready. The DEA published the NPRM (document attached) on May 16th; TODAY is the official start of the 60-day comment period. This is a 92-page document; you can read it all or just get to the meat of what the DEA is proposing; go to the last two pages and the last two paragraphs in this document to read it. Trust me when I say all the multi-state operators have their cannabis lawyers clicking away at their keyboards to submit comments. All the big players that are not in cannabis currently because of its Schedule 1 designation are preparing their comments. Who will speak for us, the smaller companies, the women-owned companies, BIPOC-owned companies, the formerly incarcerated-owned companies, and veteran-owned companies? We are, we all are. We are going to speak for ourselves and en masse. Now is the time to have our voices heard, ensure our priorities are considered, and solidify that our businesses, employees, and communities benefit from this rescheduling. The People's Ecosystem is putting together a working group led by Kate Stevens and Frederika M. Easley to help build comments for our company and assist interested external stakeholders, big or small, in creating their own comments. This working group is not to judge or influence what you or your company want to comment on; it is to help build the most powerful, succinct, and impactful comments to help shape the future of our industry. If you are interested in joining our working group you can sign up here: https://lnkd.in/dBc84HSp Let's do this! #thepeoplesecosystem #cannabis #cannabisculture #cannabiscommunity #cannabisindustry #dea #rescheduling #thepeopleareblunt https://lnkd.in/dBc84HSp

𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 Peter Sack 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗘𝗔’𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘀 “We are thrilled by this significant step in the process. Once enacted, the policy change is likely to bring significant benefits to the U.S. cannabis industry, including the elimination of punitive federal tax burdens, increased access to capital and increased employment and investment. Over the past six years, Chicago Atlantic has led the industry in providing debt capital to many of the market’s strongest operators, and we are eager to grow alongside our clients. Beyond the economic impact, the rescheduling of cannabis is a long overdue recognition of cannabis’ medical benefits and decades of misguided law enforcement policies. While there is still uncertainty as to exactly how and when the rescheduling will conclusively take place, this report signals encouraging progress that we are following closely.”
