Second Workshop of the EHS&CP held in Brussels 🤝   💧 Hydrogen is pivotal to the transition towards a climate-neutral economy, enabling emission-free transport, heating, industrial processes, and inter-seasonal energy storage.   At Ecorys, we support the Clean Hydrogen Partnership in its mission to position the EU as a leader in sustainable and circular hydrogen technologies and value chains. To achieve this, we established the European Hydrogen Sustainability and Circularity Panel (EHS&CP), aimed at driving the greening of hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and end uses. ♻   Last week, the panel of experts met for the second time, reflecting on a valuable presentation of the Panel’s work on sustainability and circularity in the European hydrogen ecosystem. Insights gained from the Panel's work will guide future projects and programmes. 💡  Special thanks to the European Commission, JRC, Hydrogen Europe, and Hydrogen Europe Research for their contributions. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with the EHS&CP.

We are pleased to note that at Davos last week EC President Ursula von der Leyen discussed the importance of energy infrastructure in the EU’s upcoming Clean Industrial Deal. Cooperation and collaboration on energy is foundational to the EU’s mission, and National Grid will continue to work closely to deliver that vision along with our partners across Europe.   The President’s statements reaffirm the need to connect energy systems something which we will be working hard to deliver, including with our LionLink project – a pioneering offshore hybrid asset which will connect the UK and the Netherlands along with offshore wind. We’re also looking further into the future with two further projects which next month we will be submitting into the EU’s Ten-Year Network Development Plan. #interconnectors https://lnkd.in/ezqjAY-c

We look back on a successful 'Energy Mission 2024 - Benelux Edition' which took place in Brussels last November. This year's edition focused on cross-border infrastructures and value chains for a sustainable industry. Experts from the Benelux and beyond came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities of hydrogen and CO2 infrastructure. In this video 🔽 Frans Weekers (Benelux Union) Bradley Ladewig (University of Luxembourg) and Eric ter Hark (Benelux Business Roundtable) talk about our common interests, the urgency of investments and they explain why cross-border cooperation is essential. During the event, the Benelux Business Roundtable presented their Memorandum to Geert Muylle, Belgian Ambassador and Special Envoy for Energy Security and Critical Resources. 🌍 Big news in the decarbonisation space! Germany’s economic ministry has granted EUR 2.8 billion to 15 companies in energy-intensive industries to support their decarbonisation efforts. Among these, five companies will focus on green hydrogen projects—an essential technology for a sustainable future. These projects are expected to save up to 17 million tonnes of CO2 over the next 15 years, driving significant progress toward a low-carbon economy. This funding is part of Germany's first Carbon Contracts for Difference programme, with more rounds to come in 2024. At the Sustainable Energy Europe- Campaign and Week European Commission Executive Vice-president Maroš Šefčovič highlighted the pivotal role of critical raw materials in securing a sustainable and resilient energy future for the EU. 🛠️ In his address, he emphasized the lessons learned from the past decade and the current crisis, noting that our interconnected energy market has been instrumental in allowing mutual assistance across the European Union. The key takeaways for the future: the need for diversification because dependencies are costly and must be minimized. 💡 The Critical Raw Materials Act is a cornerstone initiative designed to reduce these dependencies. From its first day of implementation, the Act has been driving forward strategic projects across the EU, focusing on both development and recycling of raw materials. By the end of the year, selected projects will receive substantial support to ensure their success. 🌱 Furthermore, the EU is now applying its collective purchasing strategy to critical raw materials, leveraging the economic weight of our single market to secure these essential resources. Additionally, inspired by Japan's model, we aim to establish a robust stockpiling system to safeguard against global supply chain disruptions. 🚀 This initiative underscores the EU's commitment to a sustainable, self-reliant future.
