Although I've enjoyed working with people from all age groups, there's a special synergy and deep connection I share with my fellow millennials. Our shared motivation and team spirit truly distinguish us. I firmly support the advantages of generational diversity and the unique contributions of each age group. Being a Millennial Executive in Higher Ed Was Wild I was nearly always the youngest in the room. I managed teams where almost everyone was older than me. I kept reminding folks that millennials are now directors and AVPs, while Gen Z is in middle management. I worked alongside executive leadership with four or more decades of experience. There’s no denying the value of time in higher ed. I’ve learned so much from my 20 years in the field—hard lessons, successes, failures, and mistakes that deeply shaped me. But here’s the thing: conversations, structures, and decisions too often lacked diversity in time experience. We’d check boxes with token representation—inviting students or early-career professionals to appear, but not as true participants in decision-making. The space for meaningful engagement wasn’t there. And that’s the real loss. What people with “fewer years” bring is currency in the now. A fresh lens. The creativity and courage that come from not being bound by decades of “how we’ve always done it.” Imagine if we actually made space for them to ask the critical question or point out an opportunity: “Stop doing it that way. Start doing it this way.” And then acted on. It’s time to rethink how we bring early-career professional voices into the rooms where decisions are made—not as guests, but as contributors and decision-makers. What do you think? Its all about blending the new & the proven old. Any recipe responds well with new spices & ingredients but the foundation is still necessary to give it life, take mirepoix for example. Try it, taste it and get a reaction. Blending is the answer in most cases to get things done & to problem solve. I listen, I comment and then we blend. ☮️☮️
