I’m sad and angry to hear about the active shooter incident in Wisconsin. This is the second reported active shooter incident at a school in December alone! 36 incidents in 2024. When will we finally do something to prevent them rather than focus solely on gun control or response time? I advocate as a mother of young children that as adults not only talk about preventative solutions and we also teach our children. Too many adults say they are too scared to talk about it or it stresses them out to talk about it? This is why active shooter incidents will continue to happen. We’re choosing not to socialize the conversation and focus on root causes. 1. Mental health 2. Recognizing changes in behavior or identifying patterns and trends that have led to active shooter incidents 3. We need to have a reliable way of reporting and responding to information ourselves, outside of calling law enforcement which may not respond to a potential threat because they are addressing “active” threats What would you suggest we each can do to prevent active shooters?

This article by the @Washington Post is why advice to CCOs and CEOs to stay quiet on public policy in this presidential election rings hollow to me. First, politicians won't let them. Does anyone doubt that more CEOs will be called to Mar-a-Lago to negotiate policy promises and campaign donations? Second, is staying quiet the right thing? Five years ago the Business Roundtable issued its “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation” that redefined the purpose of a corporation to promote "an economy that serves all Americans." Few issues speak to this pledge more than corporate tax policy. Of the two main-party candidates for president, one wants to raise corporate tax rates and the other wants to extend the deep cuts he put in place in 2017. Shouldn't CEOs let Americans know where they stand on this vital issue (and not just through the collective anonymity that trade and business groups provide)? I hope CCOs are raising these questions in C-suites and boardrooms: How do we balance company vs. country interests in our public policy positions; what issues are important enough for us to use our own voice; and, if we get invited to the type of meeting described in this article, should we go? go.https://lnkd.in/ereJY-9j

There is a rather long and complicated lead editorial in the WSJ today about the longshoreman's strike. The gist of which is that big labor is happy to have a champion in the White House, and so it is not surprising that we are having labor unrest in this country. As we saw with the United Auto Workers strike in 2023, the union bosses really stuck it to the manufacturers knowing that Biden was only going to pressure one side to reach a settlement. As even left-leaning NPR wrote at the time "The United Auto Workers staged an unprecedented strike against the Big Three Detroit automakers — and they emerged with three big, lucrative deals. The article goes on to report that deal will end up adding about $1000 to the cost of producing a car. That obviously is being passed on to the consumer. Now the Longshoremen are going on strike for the first time since 1977. Not a coincidence I think that this strike happened on Joe Biden's watch. And perhaps that is why the title of the WSJ editorial is "Biden's Longshoremen Strike." And if you look at what the union is demanding, you will understand why the U.S. Maritime Alliance is resisting. The Alliance is offering a 50% increase in pay. But, the union is demanding a 77% increase in pay. And lest you worry that Longshoremen are underpaid, the WSJ indicates that with base pay and overtime the average Longshoreman already makes $233,000 a year plus $99,474 in benefits. And they need a 77% increase in pay? The editorial indicates that the strike will cost the economy as much a $4.5 billion a day. You would think Biden might be interested in using his executive power to end the strike. But, Biden has said that he will not invoke the Taft-Hartley Act to end the walkout and force the parties to negotiate. This hands-off approach clearly favors the union inasmuch as the closing of the ports is crippling trade and costing a fortune. And should the union be successful in bringing business and the country to its knees in submission to their demands, you can count on the result of such a deal to be reflected in the cost of products. In other words, just like the UAW strike, the results of any "lucrative" union contracts will be reflected in costs to the consumers, i.e., inflation. Thanks Joe.

Hitler always described himself as a man of the Left. He and his cohorts took over the German Workers’ Party, which was uniformly and correctly regarded as left-wing. They renamed it the National Socialist Party. Still left-wing, even more so. The Nazi regime vastly expanded the power of government–to put it mildly–raised taxes, essentially took over private industry from the top down, and, throughout World War II, assured Germans that they would have “real socialism” once the war was over. Of course the Nazis battled the Communists in the streets in the 1930s; that was like the Cribs and the Bloods fighting over turf. Bitter enemies who are in all respects relevant to outsiders, the same. The great public relations coup of the Western Left was its success in branding both the Nazis and Italy’s Fascists as “right-wing.” In fact, they were big government–make that huge government–socialists: the opposite of Western conservatism. Hitler would have been astonished by the claim that he was somehow a free-market, limited government conservative. By any sane definition–including his own–he was a left-winger. For practical purposes, there is only one kind of socialism: national socialism whether Nazism, or Fascism. These are far-left ideologies, and the claim that they have anything to do with the right, with conservatism, is nothing but a propaganda coup on the part of Western leftists, who have successfully dodged responsibility for those who carried their ideologies to their logical conclusions. https://lnkd.in/g-AXdXHm
