Good example of AI assistant vs. AI agent, featured on a great episode of Behind the Product: Replit | Amjad Masad One of the things I love most is hearing the stories behind incredible products—what drove their creation, the challenges along the way, and the vision of the people behind them. Today, I want to share a fantastic episode of Lenny Rachitsky Podcast: “Behind the Product: Replit,” featuring Replit’s founder, Amjad Masad. Replit is often thought of as a developer tool, but in my opinion, the reality is more nuanced - it’s actually a tool for product managers and founders. Why? Because more than helping developers build code, it empowers creators to build prototypes blazingly fast. It’s a great example to distinguish between an AI Assistant and an AI Agent. An AI Assistant, as the name suggests, assists humans in performing a task. An AI Agent, on the other hand, takes ownership of a task all the way to completion—or at least much closer to it than an AI assistant ever could. In Replit’s case, the persona (or role) it’s truly supporting is the product manager. The task it tackles head-on is rapid prototyping. It’s not just a tool for developers (though they can, of course, use it). It’s empowering anyone with an idea to bring it to life, quickly and effectively. But here’s the next challenge: Once I have a prototype, or even something close to an MVP, the gap to a full product is high. To close it, you need to understand the code, evolve it, fix bugs, add features, and upgrade your production. all without breaking existing functionality. This is a challenge the industry will need to tackle quickly, as the amount of AI-generated code grows exponentially. The next questions in line are: Who’s responsible for this code? Who will test it? Who will maintain it? If you’re interested in developer tools, product design, or just love a good startup story, this episode is worth your time.
