Cannabis folks: I have been saying this for 5 years - (a) cultivation capacity in excess of demand leads to price crashes; (b) the state regulators should be publishing data to inform prospective cultivators of demand (with a conversion of canopy to estimated production in grams) and currently licensed canopy; (c) Massachusetts needs to follow the regs and reduce canopy for any cultivator selling less than 70% of production (below); (d) and people need to understand that when prices crash, at a micro level, cultivators should maximize production. It might not make sense, but as long as a producer can sell for more than their variable cost of production, micro economics dictate they continue to produce to try to offset as much of their fixed costs as possible. From a macro view, the regulator should be reining in production. That limiting will never happen in an open and competitive market because it requires industry-wide coordination, which is illegal in U.S. markets. Only the regulator can do that. New report published today! One of the most comprehensive reviews into comparative nutritient profiles of plant-based products and animal-based counterparts found that plant-based meat and milk are generally the same or better: Critics may question this, however we follow the science: 🍔 A total of 422 plant-based meat alternatives and 251 plant-based milk alternatives were evaluated for their nutritional value and compared with their animal counterparts. 🔎 ProVeg evaluated the products by using a scoring system based on internationally recognized nutrition guidelines – the WHO Nutrient Profile Model (NPM)2, the Netherlands Nutrition Center and the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA’s) nutrition claim legislation. 👍 Plant-based meat alternatives were found to have less saturated fat and significantly more fiber than their animal counterparts. 🥛 Plant-based milk alternatives contained less total fat and less saturated fat than cow’s milk. Soy milk performed particularly well in all countries. In all countries, the majority of plant-based milk alternatives analyzed can be considered low in sugar. This U.S. News & World Report article by Janet Helm examines how the growing seafood alternative category stacks up to real fish and shellfish. Plant-based seafood may try to match the taste and texture of conventional seafood, but it’s not nutritionally equivalent, says Linda Lai Cornish, MBA, founder and president of Seafood Nutrition Partnership, a nonprofit organization raising awareness of the health benefits of seafood. Seafood is a nutrient-packed food beyond the omega-3 it provides, offering selenium, zinc, vitamin D, B vitamins and high-quality protein. It’s also low in saturated fat, which is why many health-conscious people are eating more seafood in place of red meat. Decades of research have shown that eating seafood improves brain, eye and heart health, says Cornish. 😃 Regenerative agriculture is gaining momentum… 😰 and along its #marketing power, its potential for #Greenwashing is rising 🌍 With an ability to deliver both environmental and social benefits, regen ag has made a recent appearance in most CSR strategies in the agri-food sector, as a powerful force to harness. As shown by the recent FAIRR Initiative report, the large majority of major food companies are now pledging their commitment for regen ag. That’s a good news! ☝️ YET, the same study shows that such pledges are often not supported with clear targets and metrics, and are even less including financial support for farmers... In consideration of this risk, the World Economic Forum has just released an article listing 5 principles to ensure an impactful and legitimate development of regenerative agriculture: 1/ A clear framework and metrics Any framework involved in regen ag should define clear principles and practices associated with the appropriate methods to measure impact. 2/ Farmers should be at the center of the transition Project practices must be adapted to the farm’s environmental and social context, with the farmer benefiting from economic gains. 3/ Transparency, measurable claims, reliable data Companies must report their impacts with trusted and transparent environmental data. 4/ Building trust through established standards Regenerative projects approved by quality standards gain in credibility and trust. 5/ Long term commitment Regenerative practices are not a trend, and should be adopted in the long term to ensure effective carbon sequestration an ecosystem regeneration. Definitions about how food is grown and arguments about the benefits are still missing the point. Forget the labels, it's all about the quality of food that comes out. Does it create symbiosis and make humans and planet healthy or not? To understand food quality goes beyond definitions.

This is important, and a lot of carbon removal methods face similar dynamics and don't know it yet. For instance, what do we do when pure VCM activity isn't enough to exclusively pay for something like DAC, when DAC receives public subsidy? What happens when other types of carbon removal aren't just producing removed CO2, but also enhancing soil fertility or creating a coproduct they can sell? Faulty versions of financial additionality could protect some players within carbon removal, but I suspect it's going to hold back market scale, similar to what it does in agriculture as Matt Trudeau details here.

Collecting [emissions] data and helping it travel through a supply chain is NOT the hard part. Certifying a farm or ranch “Regenerative” is even easier. I’m pretty excited to have been on the founding team of this company and watch Matthew Rogers interview with NYSE. We are really working towards a major paradigm change in how we perceive uneaten “food”. Most people who read uneaten “food” are thinking food “waste”. But the magic of this system is that it prevents it from ever becoming a waste. Customers can feed the ground and dried food to their chickens or post it to Mill’s commercial feed facility in Mukilteo Washington to be converted in a commercial chicken feed ingredient. In my mind this saves so much energy and water over the commercial composting of food waste. Rarely does commercial compost from residential food waste make it back to the land which grew the food, leaving the nutrient cycle broken. I think that when Mill Food Grounds are fed to animals the nutrients are going to their highest and best use. Some of the dear folks who helped make this paradigm come true (Azita Sayadi Alyssa Pollack Ross Mazur) and a few others that were critical in bringing it to life (Harry Tannenbaum Kristi Smedley). And of course my little flock of chickens who grew and thrived on a diet of Mill’s recycled feed ingredient and Scratch & Peck’s organic feed.
