This article really resonated with me, especially the section below about founders knowing their numbers. What skill set should a founder starting a brand today have?  Drew F.: "Now, more than ever, you have to know your numbers. You have to be able to describe your unit economics, not only certainly to any prospective investor, but also to yourself because the odds that you’re going to get any capital are near zero. If you don’t know your unit economics and cash flow, you won’t have a business. The founder that knows their numbers and how to scale the business in a healthy and efficient way is the founder that will prevail." Scaling a beauty brand has never been easy, but it has gotten increasingly more difficult over the past few years. Big news in grocery retail M&A: Albertsons Companies has officially called off its USD 25 billion merger with Kroger, more than two years after announcing the deal. The decision follows rulings from state and federal judges blocking the transaction on antitrust grounds. In response, Albertsons has reaffirmed its standalone strategy and - for good order - filed a lawsuit against Kroger alleging the company failed to use "best efforts" and take "all actions necessary" to get the deal over the antitrust line. It's not uncommon for parties to get litigious when deals fall apart, but Albertsons (and its shareholder Cerberus Capital) seems pretty peeved about this one, having spent "hundreds of millions of dollars" 😨 seeking approval for the merger. A key nuance lies in the merger agreement's language: all the antitrust-related performance obligations in the agreement are based on a "reasonable best efforts" standard *except* for the clause relating specifically to Kroger’s obligations, which are held to the stronger "best efforts" standard—a small but significant distinction. It's unlikely this situation will be resolved anytime soon, but it will be interesting to see how it develops.

On the lawyer's side, attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants spend an average of 7.4 hours per week on unnecessary updates, redundant communication, and activities that aren't directly contributing towards getting a client's case solved. Very rarely in venture, magic 🪄 happens and you realize in the first meeting that you've found founders and a company that you absolutely want to back. When we backed Recurate, resale volumes were already meaningful and consumers were already thinking about the untapped value in their closets. But we suspected this was just the early innings of what could be, and that the meaningful evolution would come when brands embraced their own resale markets. Recurate’s customers were able to capture aspirational shoppers with an outlet-like experience, building a next generation of brand loyalists; they were also able to better monetize their own unsold inventory. We are so excited for the next chapter as Adam Siegel and Wilson Griffin join forces with Trove and bringing a powerful resale experience to brands globally.
