In 2021, California committed to expanding universal PreK to all 4-year-olds and income-eligible 3-year-olds by 2025–26. This new report uses an analysis of local education agencies’ survey responses to provide an update on universal PreK implementation across the state, finding that agencies are making promising progress toward expansion but still face challenges related to facilities, staffing, and sustainable funding. https://lnkd.in/gnyvkHsT

We did it! The NSBAC, as part of a mighty coalition of small business owners, small business support and advocacy organizations and community leaders, helped safeguard a vital support program for California small businesses. Districts and county offices of education throughout California face an ever-growing list of mandated state and federal reports, data submissions and planning documents. Although individual reports may not present an undue burden, the cumulative impact draws resources away from critical tasks and responsibilities among staff, especially in smaller districts and COEs. Take a look at just a sampling of the plethora of reports LEAs must submit in CSBA’s “Drowning in Documentation” brief: https://lnkd.in/gtMxz6b4 CSBA co-sponsored SB 1315 would require the California Department of Education to produce a report on the number of state and federal reports required of LEAs in an effort to identify where info could be condensed and where some reports could be eliminated — helping LEAs free up more time and resources to provide for the needs of California’s students.

NCAPER introduces The Bay Area Arts Readiness Network (BAARN). BAARN is a new project launching in early 2025 that will combine two critical forces to build Bay Area artists’ resiliency: Readiness and Networking. BAARN will engage artists in all disciplines throughout a ten-county region to provide preparedness training, networking, and funding. Supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, BAARN combines the experience and resources of the nation’s two leading organizations promoting readiness, response, and recovery in the arts sector, NCAPER, and the Performing Arts Readiness project. This large-scale pilot project will create infrastructure to prepare artists facing increasing and overlapping crises. Just finished reading the 2024 California Play Equity Report commissioned by the LA84 Foundation. Renata Simril who serves as the foundation’s President and CEO mentions how now more than ever we must act to make sure California youth have access to play. The report highlights 6 key findings. 1) Youth in California are not moving enough (i.e. sports or physical activity). 2) Gaps in play equity exist (i.e. by gender, race, and ethnicity, ability level, and income level) and the most affected are Latinas and African American females, Latino youth in general, youth with disabilities, youth in households with annual incomes of $50,000 or less, and youth in the Inland Empire (i.e. Riverside and San Bernardino Counties). 3) 30% of youth have stopped playing/participating in a sport in the last two years due to factors such as cost, loss of interest, and time commitment. 4) Organized sports and structured play can amplify levels of regular physical activity. 5) Cost is a key barrier for parents who want to enroll their children in sports. 6) Both youth and parents agree that play equity is very important. Dr. Jonathan Haidt also mentions in his book, The Anxious Generation, how play is important and essential for our well-being and more so for today’s youth. Hopefully we can work with as many organizations and people as we can so we can act now and build whatever infrastructure is necessary for us all to address these findings.

Support the San Diego Flood Recovery Fund Your donation assists San Diegans affected by the January 22, 2024 floods with long-term recovery. Long-Term Recovery In partnership with the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services, the San Diego Flood Recovery Fund assists San Diegans affected by the January 22, 2024 floods with long-term recovery. Funds will be used to assist with home repairs, unmet needs, and program operation costs, providing temporary housing for those whose homes are uninhabitable. The money raised will be given to San Diego Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) which has been actively supporting flood survivors since early February 2024. To date, VOAD’s efforts have restored hundreds of homes to be safe and habitable. United Way of Ventura County is meeting their community’s needs in a wide variety of ways, two of which are particularly relevant this November: National Homelessness Awareness Month: For more than four years, United Way of Ventura County’s Landlord Engagement Program has been helping those with federal housing choice vouchers navigate the housing market and secure housing, and earlier this year, they began homelessness prevention work. To date, they have helped 782 community members secure housing or stay housed. United Way of Ventura County also raises awareness about homelessness in their community and connects those experiencing homelessness to resources. https://lnkd.in/eDFXTgVJ Native American and Indigenous Peoples' Heritage Month: As Ventura County is home to more than 20,000 Indigenous people, United Way of Ventura County made sure their free tax preparation outreach and services were available in languages commonly spoken by Indigenous peoples in their community: Spanish, Mixteco, and Zapoteco.

Last week, Governor Newsom released his May Revision to his proposed 2024-25 state budget.
