Pressure injuries aren’t just painful and costly– they can also hinder a patient’s ability to recover from the illness or injury that brought them to the hospital. A recent study revealed that pressure injuries can severely impede recovery, particularly in patients with spinal cord injuries. The study found that these wounds can limit motor function improvement compared to patients without pressure injuries. Since pressure injuries often harbor bacteria that can spread throughout the body, they can disrupt the healing process and delay recovery.
