You can now learn more about our work in The Future of Food exhibit at the Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley! Marcos Floriano and Adam Boisvert attended opening night this past weekend, along with 800+ people who were eager to explore the exhibit and learn how food choices can help heal the planet, fuel our bodies, and build more sustainable communities. "When I envision the future of food, it must be regenerative—a system where humans, animals, worms, and soil microorganisms thrive in a symbiotic relationship. This interconnectedness is the key to reimagining our food system. By developing a locally-driven, scalable model, we can create a blueprint that’s adaptable worldwide, ensuring we are prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead." -Marcos Floriano Dive into the Future of Food and explore the exhibit today! https://lnkd.in/ejCeahCu #FutureOfFood #UrbanTilth #foodsystems #foodjustice #urbanfarming
About us
Urban Tilth inspires, hires, and trains local residents to cultivate agriculture, feed our community, and restore relationships to land to build a more sustainable food system, within a just and healthier community. Founded in 2005 to help build a more sustainable, healthy, and just local food system, Urban Tilth has emerged as a local leader, a catalyst drawing together a variety of individual, discrete initiatives into a web of integrated, food- and community-focused efforts. In sum, we farm, feed, forage, teach, train, build community, employ, and give back. We help our community grow our own food; train and employ our own young people as “home grown experts”; teach our local residents about the relationships among food, health, poverty, and justice; and forge partnerships with local small farmers to increase demand for their produce. We use our 7 school and community gardens and small urban farms to teach and employ community members to grow, distribute, cook, and consume thousands of pounds of local produce each year, to create a more equitable and just food system within a healthier and more self-sufficient community.

Our Watershed Restoration Field Crew played a key role in the successful Rheem Creek Restoration Project—planting 650+ native plants and working alongside several agencies to transform a chronic flooding hazard into a revitalized creek ecosystem! Before restoration, Rheem Creek was causing devastating impacts on nearby residents. Families like Juan Perez and Laila Schepps endured regular flooding that damaged homes, created health hazards with mold, destroyed property, and forced residents to spend thousands on makeshift solutions. Many in this predominantly underserved community suffered silently for decades while jurisdictional confusion prevented effective solutions. "In addition to the flood risk reduction, which is obviously hugely important for residents, this project has helped revitalize this narrow creek ecosystem in a heavily urbanized area," said Nathan Bickart, our Director of Watershed Restoration Programs. This collaborative effort between multiple agencies demonstrates how communities, cities, counties, residents and partners can work together to create lasting environmental justice solutions that protect both people and ecosystems. #UrbanTilth #WatershedRestoration #ClimateResilience #EnvironmentalJustice https://lnkd.in/gC5-AYFC

There could and should be a bright future for young farmers and aspiring farmers in California! I’m excited to continue to work with the CDFA to increase access to land and other resources for the farmers of today and tomorrow …
🪴 Celebrating California’s Women in Agriculture on International Women’s Day 👩🌾 https://lnkd.in/gMrBcQ_B March 8 is International Women’s Day, and CDFA would like to commemorate the occasion by celebrating the dedication and leadership of California women in agriculture. There are 45,244 women producers across the state, and they manage 11.5 million acres on farms and ranches that contribute $22.2 billion in agricultural sales. California’s farming and ranching women are vital to the success of our state’s industries and are at the forefront of shaping the future of food production. Whether they are growing crops, raising livestock, or working in the ag value chain, their tireless work ensures that we continue to have access to fresh, sustainable, and high-quality produce. As we recognize International Women’s Day, let’s recognize the invaluable contributions of every woman involved in agriculture—from farmworkers to ranchers to farm owners. Their resilience and passion are building a better, more sustainable future for all. Photo: Paola Casillas, with Urban Tilth (Richmond, California)

Our Executive Director, Doria Robinson, recently joined the California Department of Food and Agriculture's Black History Month panel discussion, bringing Urban Tilth's mission and vision to this important conversation! Doria shared our commitment to providing fresh food to communities with limited access and highlighted the critical intersection of agriculture and equity. "Operating a farm in a community with little access to food has given me a deep appreciation for the role agriculture plays in equity," Doria emphasized during the panel, while also acknowledging the often-overlooked historical contributions of Black Americans to our agricultural systems. We're proud to have our perspective represented at the state level and to continue advocating for food justice in Richmond and beyond! True health equity means more than access to doctors—it requires addressing the root causes of poor health. Our partnership with LifeLong Medical Care reflects this holistic approach, ensuring that fresh, nutritious food is part of the foundation for community well-being. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gijPBgku
Before terms like “access to care” and “community health challenges” were widely discussed, Black CHC leaders were already working to improve the root causes of poor health. Dr. John W. Hatch, a pioneering public health leader, knew that health was about more than doctor visits—so he started farm cooperatives, installed mosquito netting, and built outhouses to prevent illness. At LifeLong Medical Care, we take a similar approach—because access to care alone isn’t enough if people don’t have food, housing, or safety. For example, we partner with Urban Tilth, a local farm that empowers communities to grow their own food and improve access to fresh, nutritious produce. Just as Dr. Hatch (pictured below on the left) recognized that nutrition is a pillar of good health, our collaboration with Urban Tilth helps ensure more people have reliable access to fresh food. LifeLong remains committed to expanding access to high-quality care and programs that address the real challenges people face in staying healthy. What’s one issue you think CHCs should focus on more?
