About us

The Barnes Family started DAISY in 1999 to say a profound thank you to nurses for the extraordinary skill and compassion they provide patients and families every day. Our experience with nurses during son Patrick Barnes' eight week hospitalization showed us that direct care nurses do super-human work that is rarely recognized. We had no idea that today, more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 32 other countries and territories would honor their nurses all year long with The DAISY Award. Over 2,100,000 nominations have been written, describing how a nurse has impacted a patient or family. Clearly, the Barnes Family are not the only people compelled to say thank you to nurses! The strategic value of this kind of meaningful recognition is now being proven in research study after study. Impacts include contribution to a healthy work environment, nurse satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and cultural transformation. It's remarkable what happens when a healthcare organization focuses some attention on all the good that's going on. We also honor nursing students with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students and nursing faculty with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. Through our J. Patrick Barnes Grants, we support nursing research and EBP projects with grants to nurses.

A DAISY Legacy: A Mother and Daughter Honored on the Same Day Some moments in nursing are so special that they deserve to be celebrated far and wide. This is one of them. Ancy Thomas, a dedicated perioperative nurse at Plainview Hospital, and her daughter, Stacie Thomas, an exceptional telemetry nurse on 1East at Syosset Hospital, each received the prestigious DAISY Award—on the very same day. The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in delivering compassionate, skillful care, and it’s no surprise that both Ancy and Stacie embody these qualities. Nursing isn’t just a profession for them; it’s a calling that runs in their family. Ancy has spent many years in the operating room, advocating for patients when they are at their most vulnerable. Her expertise and kind heart have made a lasting impact on her colleagues and the countless lives she has touched. Meanwhile, Stacie carries that same passion to the bedside, ensuring that her patients in tele feel seen, heard, and cared for during their most critical moments. To win a DAISY Award is an incredible honor. To have both a mother and daughter recognized on the same day? That is nothing short of extraordinary. Congratulations, Ancy and Stacie! Your dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to patient care inspire us all. Northwell is lucky to have you, and the nursing profession is brighter because of you. #DAISYAward #NursingExcellence #NorthwellNurses #LikeMotherLikeDaughter

  • At 13 weeks pregnant, a patient sought answers in L&D when her OB office left her in the dark. That’s when she met Kelsey—a nurse who went above and beyond to ensure she got the best care possible. For the rest of her pregnancy, the patient expressed that she felt so grateful for that experience because it led her to the best OB care. Weeks later, at 35 weeks pregnant, the patient found herself back in L&D triage, in preterm labor. Amidst the chaos, Kelsey was there again—advocating, supporting, and ensuring she received the best care. But the true miracle? When the patient’s newborn had a terrifying reflux episode in a Walmart parking lot, Kelsey just happened to be there, jumping into the ambulance to help. The patient said it felt like a miracle that Kelsey was there and helped to get the baby stable. Thank you, Kelsey, for all you did for your patient and her baby! Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree! Read Kelsey’s nomination story here: https://lnkd.in/eVkEK8KF Help us celebrate Kelsey by adding a comment.

  • Nurse Nate's compassion and dedication went far beyond his duty when he helped an Amharic-speaking family navigate an overwhelming situation. A patient, brought in as a John Doe, was believed to be nonverbal and mentally handicapped. With the assistance of Dekalb police detectives, his parents were located—but they only spoke Tigrinya, one of Ethiopia's major languages, which Nate happened to know from his background. Understanding the urgency, Nate comforted the patient and confirmed his identity, bringing him a moment of relief. When the elderly, non-English-speaking parents struggled to find the hospital, Nate spent two hours patiently guiding them over the phone, even giving them his personal phone number. Though his shift had ended, he stayed to ensure they were reunited with their son, providing much-needed peace in an unfamiliar country. Despite the patient not being assigned to him, Nate answered the call of humanity, proving that true care extends beyond professional duty. Congratulations, Nate! Send Nate kind words and congratulations in the comments. Read Nate’s nomination story here: https://lnkd.in/gNc3Hbfw
