This year’s New Bedford Half Marathon was more than just a race – it was a testament to the dedication and generosity of our employees and community. Going the extra mile, 17 Southcoast Health team members ran to make a meaningful impact on patient care. Together they laced up their sneakers to support services across the system including Southcoast Health Heart & Vascular, Southcoast Health Cancer and Southcoast Health at Home. Thanks to the commitment of these runners and the generosity of their supporters, just under $13,000 was raised in support of Southcoast Health. Leading these efforts, Amy Fowler, raised more than $8,000 for the Southcoast Health at Home program and Tarl Brogan, who ran in honor of his father Russ Brogan and in loving memory of Armindo Camara, raised over $2,000 to support our cancer center. Meg Rogers, Danielle Medina, Emmanuel Resendes, Rosa Branco Pimentel and Dawn Teixeira Badger also dedicated their run to Team Southcoast’s fundraising efforts. Behind the scenes, over 40 Southcoast Health volunteers additionally played a crucial role in making the day a success by helping facilitate race number pickup stations, hand out water, cleaning, and handing medals to runners at the finish line. Members of our emergency department team were also onsite to assist any runners needing medical attention. We are grateful to all who participated, donated to and supported Southcoast Health in this year’s race. For those who wish to support this cause, there’s still time! Donations are open until March 31, 2025, and can be made at https://lnkd.in/eVCZsf_g. To learn more please visit: https://lnkd.in/ej9WcUZE

The Southcoast Health Trauma Center at St. Luke’s Hospital maintained its position as the most advanced trauma center in southeastern Massachusetts by earning reverification from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and redesignation from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health as a Level II Adult Trauma Center in a 2024 comprehensive review process. Officially earning verification from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and designation from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health as the first and only Level II Trauma Center in Massachusetts’ EMS Region 5 in 2021, the center’s highly specialized team has now cared for over 8,500 patients and treats approximately 2,000 patients annually. Over the years, the location has continuously grown to meet the needs of the community. Recently, the program added two additional trauma beds in the emergency room at St. Luke’s Hospital and opened an outpatient trauma clinic to centralize patient care close to home after a traumatic event. “We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of medical professionals within our response area to provide high-level trauma care to our patients and treat our providers with professionalism and respect in some very stressful situations. The Southcoast Health Trauma Center at St. Luke’s Hospital is a great asset to our patients,” said Bethann Faunce, Interim Chief, Fall River Emergency Medical Services. This week marks the five-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic – a time when our world changed in ways we never imagined and tested our strength, resilience and compassion. As a community, we stood strong. We became more resilient and resourceful. We discovered that friends and family mattered more than ever, and we grew closer despite the distance. As a lifeline for our community, Southcoast Health was proud to be a part of that family, and our commitment to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our region never wavered. Today, as we look back, we reflect on the profound impact the pandemic had on our lives. We remember those we lost, honor those who fought through unimaginable hardships, and recognize the incredible sacrifices made by so many. To the Southcoast Health staff, nurses and doctors who cared for our community – thank you. Your dedication saved lives and gave hope by getting us through the pandemic as safely as possible. Together, we have all moved forward – and today we are stronger than ever.
